Chicago Jazz Vocalist Claudia Hommel Sings from Her New Jazz Faure Project.Paris Soiree Sunday 10 Sept At 18h30

RENDEZ VOUS AVEC PATRICIAThis Sunday 10 September At 18h30
Our Guests of Honor:
Claudia Hommel Paris-born singer-actor Claudia Hommel returns from Chicago to our salon to introduce her latest project, the Jazz Faure Project. And what is the recipe for this cabaret confection of French impressionism and American jazz?
Take the art songs Gabriel Faure created for his friends to sing at salons of the 1880s and 1890s, bring in a second singer to enrich the dialogue, add a jazz combo of piano, bass, drums and saxophone, clarinet or flute, introduce the 20th century rhythms of swing, bossa nova, jazz waltz and voila! a 21st century way to celebrate these wonderful songs.Claudia and the Jazz Fauré Ensemble are in the midst of recording the first volume of their project, so she'll present a short video from a recent performance at the Green Lake Festival of Music (Wisconsin) and CD excerpts from the forthcoming album. You may even want to leave the evening sporting a Jazz Fauré Renoir t-shirt or tote bag to show your support.
Visit www.jazzfaure.com for a preview.
About Claudia:Claudia Hommel is a singer and actor specializing in French chansons and mélodies, in cabaret and concert, for schools, theatres, clubs, museums, and private events. At our salon, we may entice her to sing a few Parisian songs unaccompanied (or bring an acquaintance to play guitar or accordion for the occasion).Claudia also organizes CABARET INTOURLUDES and serves as guide for intimate groups from the States. Eight fans and friends are joining her this week and Claudia welcomes salon participants to join the itinerary around town. (In fact, she has room for one more person for an exclusive concert-croisière with singer Eric Vincent, Saturday evening the 9th –70 Euros for dinner, cruise and concert.) If interested, contact her at clobert@compuserve.com, or leave a message for her at 01-42-02-37-11.

Acclaimed Author Janet McDonald Speaks Of Paris Life. Future Projects. Paris Soirees Dinner Sun 30 JulyAt 18h30

Janet, Author Of Chill Wind Speaks Of Creating An International Parisian Life And Moving From Law To Becoming An Internationally Acclaimed Author.

RENDEZ VOUS AVEC PATRICIA

This Sunday 30 July At 18h30 Our Guest of Honor:

Janet McDonald
Internationally Acclaimed Author

Paris: On Becoming a writer: "One day I was a lawyer drearily dividing my obscenely well-paid time between complex business deals and surreptitious Web-surfing.? The next day, or so it now seems, I had a tell-too-much memoir and was on the Rosie O'Donnell show telling her too much about my life in the projects. And on NPR telling Ira Glass too much about my life in Paris.. Since then, I've traded pinstripe suits for polka dot pajamas and delightedly divide my time between crafting characters and imagining plots."

One of seven children, Janet McDonald grew up in Brooklyn, New York.. holds a Bachelors degree in French Literature from Vassar College, a Masters in Journalism from Columbia University School of Journalism and a law degree from New York University School of Law.? She has practiced law in New York, Seattle and Paris, and is a member of MENSA, the international IQ society., McDonald moved to Paris where her career as an international corporate lawyer took her from Brooklyn to Bermuda and with stops all over Europe as well as to India.? She began writing fiction for young adults on a whim and has garnered widespread critical acclaim, winning in 2002 for Chill Wind the American Library Associations Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award.? Published by New York's prestigious Farrar, Straus & Giroux, her five books have been included on a number of best books lists by the American Library Association, the New York Public Library and the Chicago Public Library and have been translated into French.? Her memoir Project Girl is required reading in schools throughout the United States. Not surprisingly, Hollywood has come knocking. Janet McDonald's official website is

JAZZ AND THE FRENCH CONNECTION. Patricia Myers. International Jazz Critic Paris Soirees Dinner Sunday 23 July At 18h30

RENDEZ VOUS AVEC PATRICIA

This Sunday 23 July At 18h30

Our Guest of Honor:

Patricia Myers
International Jazz Critic

JAZZ AND THE FRENCH CONNECTION

If not for Paris and the French, jazz might have disappeared after World War II. That is the belief of Patricia Myers, an international jazz critic who will speak to Paris Soirees about Jazz and the French Connection on Sunday, July 23.

Jazz was loved by the French in the 1920s, when Josephine Baker first brought her danse primitive to Paris. New Orleans saxophonist Sidney Bechet came next, followed in the 1930s by pianist Bud Powell and saxophonists Johnny: “The Little Giant” Griffin, Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins. In Paris, they found escape from punitive Jim Crow laws in the United States. Here they were accepted, without regard to their color, for their musicianship. Jazz was revered in Europe as a symbol and expression of freedom.

But American jazz was controversial, too. It was rejected by nationalists who believed the imported music was corrupting the purity of French artistry. But even amid the xenophobia of the times, many French musicians illustrated the more flexible and open aspect of the French culture by performing jazz. Her talk will trace the Paris jazz movement through the clubs and musicians, with excerpts from significant jazz albums related to Paris.

Patricia Myers has had a 30-year journalistic career as a reporter and editor for newspapers and magazines, writing about the international jazz scene since 1993. Her interest in both jazz and Paris began when she saw the film,:An American in Paris. She began listening to and writing about jazz in the 1970s, and first came to Paris in 1992.

Currently a free-lance writer for national and international publications and webzines, she specializes in articles about travel, food and entertainment, especially jazz. She currently writes for http://www.allaboutjazz.com/, AZJazz magazine and Jazz Notes. She has been published in Jazz Times, American Rag, Mississippi Rag and World Jazz Network. She spends each summer in Paris, and has been a Paris Soirees guest twice before, speaking about jazz luminaries in 2004 and aphrodisiacs in 2005

Diary Of An Oxygen Thief. The Author Presents His Novel. Paris Soirees Dinner Sun 16 July At 18h30

RENDEZ VOUS AVEC PATRICIA

DIARY OF AN OXYGEN THIEF

Excerpt:

Hurt people hurt people

Say Holden Caulfield was an alcoholic and Lolita was a photographer's assistant and somehow they met in Bright Lights Big City. He's blinded by love. She by ambition. DIARY OF AN OXYGEN THIEF is honest hilarious and heartrending but above all a very real account of what we do to each other and what we allow to have done to us.

Review:

I don't know whether to be flattered or outraged but as I read these pages I felt gratitude. It's hard to find work so drenched in honesty and I was glad for the chance to read it. I think the author is a decent unafraid writer, and that's rare. And as an editor I think the writing demonstrates a raw honesty and humour. First he steals the oxygen from you, then he spits it back in your face. One of the most interesting and controversial encounters I've made through a book.

Lorenzo di Rita, Editor in Chief at COLORS Magazine, Rome

Anonymous is originally Irish but has lived in London, Minneapolis, New York and presently Amsterdam. Before this he worked for many years as a creative director in the advertising industry.

Julie:
What are successful site owners doing in terms of design, function and marketing? How do you get the results you intend? Can a person maintain a site without technical expertise? What standards should a site meet and what should it cost?

Julie Vetter is a web site coach and former manager of the web site division of a California ISP who now works independently from Paris. She relishes the triple junction of artists, computing and business that web sites cause -- a clash of worlds whose successful fusion can result in a modern work of art and a profitable Internet presence. web site: http://askjv.info

Tom:
As Julie says there are two very distinct sides to web site design. It's like the two different sides of the human brain. The art side is the creation of the atmosphere which communicates the core of the message to the viewers subconscious rather than conscious mind. This is the only way for a message to be truly received and taken on board when combined with the written message.
Tom Byrne has been a painter, illustrator and sculptor for over 20 years. Since coming to Paris he has changed tack slightly and moved into Trompe L'oeil also. His clients in Paris include Laurent Taieb the french restauranteur. He continues to do illustrations for Irish clients and has just completed SKY channels new national outdoor advertising campaign in Ireland.

RENDEZ VOUS AVEC PATRICIA

Our Guest Of Honor:

Gil Murray
Artist

What Makes A Painter Paint?

Showing examples of his artwork, Artist Gil Murray will describe why he chooses his subjects and depicts them according to his particular vision. He will show paintings of Paris and other locales in France and will tell us the, ten amusing, stories "behind the paintings". For example, he might paint a particular person because of the unusual visual "story" that person tells. Or he might be impressed with the roof line of a particular building. Or he might be moved by the colors of a particular building or sky. Gil is a natural storyteller and the mixture of his stories with his paintings will be fun

Gil Murray lives in the Boston area and does commissioned watercolors of buildings. He is on the faculty of the Cambridge, Massachusetts Center for Adult Education where he gives architectural walking tours of Boston. He is also a published poet and published cartoonist.

Selling Your Company. Selling Your Services. Selling Yourself

Veronique Bessonat began a career in sales in 1983, after studies at the Sorbonne in Economics, and has never stopped. She found sales to be the perfect way to sharpen her own business tools while teaching others to succeed. Helping others to succeed has always been one of her goals.

She has created seven portfolios of customers in the fields of banking, investments, commercial training and advertising.

From Veronique:

Companies: Usually I ask the manager how much turnover he expects after the training. We discuss the possibilities to get it. Then, I present a plan, saying that the budget must be “covered” at least 3 times by the new margin. It works. Recently, I had to make 10% more turnover in two months. We had 15% more in one month.

Individuals: I ask: how much you want to earn with your activity. And we discuss the steps to get there, and how we can make it, taking into account their personality, customers, competitors and services. And this works too, mostly because people feel that I really back them up. They feel that I want them to succeed. ADDRESS:

CAFE LIFE: PARIS. Cultural Historians Christine & Dennis.Graf. W. Scott Haine. Paris Soirees Dinner Sunday 11 June At 18h30

The Culture of Paris through Café Life.

This Sunday 11 June At 18h30.

Our Guests Of Honor:

Dennis & Christine Graf, W. Scott Haine, French Cultural Historians

Café Life: Paris

Christine Graf wrote "The Cafes of Paris". she and Dennis wrote "Paris by Bistro" together.

Cafes:

In an article written for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Anne Gillespie Lewis noted the Christine Graf description of the cafe-bar Lou Pascalou:

Using a mix of history, gossip, personal observation, and guidebook information, Christine Graf has done travellers a great favor with this charming guide... filled with sparkling little sequins of history and quotes from famous cafe habitues... One afternoon in a cafe gives you more of a sense of the city than visiting a dozen museums. —Los Angeles Times, on Graf's first book The Cafes of Paris.

Lou Pascalou is a bar off Menilmontant. It's also a joyous romp into the past. To get here you'll have to walk down Boulevard Menilmontant, a lively and untidy street lined with all sorts of ethnic restaurants. Ordinary people live here. Dogs bark. Children cry. Old ladies lug their packages out of the Arab grocery across the street. There is a life and a vitality here, even late at night, that you can't find in the more exclusive parts of Paris.

In their new book, Cafe Life Paris, the Grafs describe cafes in several categories. Some of the categories or themes are Great and Glamorous Places, a chapter about the legendary cafes that are as significant in Paris life as any monument; Legends of Literature and Art, including the cafe where you could once see Picasso sitting with Dora Maar, and Neighborhood Cafes like the one in the 11th where circus artists still stop by.

Paris By Bistro:

In her article Anne Gillespie Lewis pointed out that the book is more than a collection of reviews. The Grafs look at bistros in many other dimensions: by location and interest (those that attracted African-American artists, or the powerful, for example). If you're making a pilgrimage to Paris to follow in the footsteps of Hemingway and other literary lions, the Grafs book will tell you where they ate. (Hemingway wrote much of The Sun Also Rises at the bar at Closerie des Lilas, where at one point F. Scott Fitzgerald gave him the manscript of his new novel, The Great Gatsby.)

The Christine and Dennis Graf and W. Scott Haine books :are available at W.H. Smith’s, Brentano's, The Red Wheelbarrow and other English language bookstores in Paris. Click on the link to see Patricia’s favorite café: Café Marly: http://www-rocq.inria.fr/~gouet/Photos/Paris/diapo_36.html
