Happy Hour. Scott's Presentation. Dinner and Dessert. More Great Socializing.

Sunday 9 February 2014

19h00 - 22h30ish

Our Guest Of Honor
:

Scott Haine
Author. Historian Of Food And Sociability.

Scott is the author of “The Thinking Space”, (newly published by Ashgate).
His talk will focus on café life and creativity.

The Café As A Cultural Institution In Paris, Italy And Vienna

The cafe is not only a place to enjoy a cup of coffee, it is also a space - distinct from its urban environment - in which to reflect and take part in intellectual debate. Since the eighteenth century in Europe, intellectuals and artists have gathered in cafes to exchange ideas, inspirations and information that has driven the cultural agenda for Europe and the world. Without the café, would there have been a Karl Marx or a Jean-Paul Sartre?

The café as an institutional site has been the subject of renewed interest amongst scholars in the past decade, and its role in the development of art, ideas and culture has been explored in some detail. However, few have investigated the ways in which cafés create a cultural and intellectual space which brings together multiple influences and intellectual practices and shapes the urban settings of which they are a part.

Scott Haine is a San Francisco Bay Area Historian of Food and Sociability. He currently teaches at the University of Maryland University College. His previous books include the outstanding: "The World of the Paris Café: Sociability among the French Working Class, 1789-1914."

Scott's A Great Speaker! Look forward to it. - Patricia

"90+ Ways You Know You’re Becoming French."

Our Guest Of Honor

Shari Segall
Author

From Shari:

"The French say that foreigners can never truly “become” French--no matter what legal status is inscribed upon what identity papers they carry around in their France-based wallets. Nor might newly minted citizens or official residents wish to swap their own cultural manners and mentalities for those of the local waiter who serves them their morning café au lait et croissant (to say nothing of totally being able to). But if you’re here long enough, your adaptation mirrors, those Escher drawings where columns of black geese or fish on the left fly or swim straight across the page, migrating and mutating by imperceptible degrees, melting into and finally becoming their white counterparts on the right. To a greater or lesser degree, whether you expected to or not, one day you realize that you’re crossing to the other side. How do you know that you’ve arrived?

We're going to have fun with this one!

Shari Leslie Segall will come with her newly released, highly in-demand little book, 90+ Ways You Know You're Becoming French (co-authored with FUSAC co-owner Lisa Vanden Bos and beautifully illustrated by Hungarian artist Judit Halasz). Participants will call out a number. Shari will turn to that "way of becoming French" in the book and read it. Participants will then reflect upon and discuss how "French" they have (or haven't) become on this particular point. (There have already been on-line "competitions" among readers as to how many becoming-French criteria they have met.

Books will be available for signing and purchase (with two euros off the selling price for Paris Soirées participants).

Shari Leslie Segall, in Paris since 1985 and author of France-themed books and articles, teaches English and cross-cultural communication at the prestigious Institut des Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po) and at the French Military Academy. She is the founding director of Foreign Affairs, which provides linguistic and cross-cultural training and creates English-language documents for executives.

Our Guest Of Honor
:

Peter Schlipf
Photographer

Peter loves traveling and capturing images of what he sees. This Sunday, he will share with us his impressions of Nepal.

From Peter:

“...As part of a sponsor tour visiting an Orphanage in Nepal, I was able to also capture images of everyday 21st century life there during a 2 week stay in Feb. 2013.

Ranging from daily religious rituals, people at work, pilgrims visiting holy Hindu and Buddist sites, street life in Kathmandu and out in the country on our way to the resort town of Pokara in the west.

I was able to portray people of various walks of life involved in living their lives and dealing with their environment the best they know how - 5 years after the end of a centuries long monarchy

Peter Schlipf, is a German based American Photographer who has been living in and travelling extensively around Europe since 1991. Peter is originally from the New York city area.

From Roy:

“...more than 100 years ago the political circus existed (in the late 1890s)
Congress and Wall Street, a political circus that has again become the norm today. Greed has always been a constant in politics. It takes a strong public will and a few honest politicians to keep it in check, but our political parties have become masters at deflectingthe public away from the real issues. I look forward to exploring with you what got us here (again), and what a rational path forward might look like. Thanks for the oportunity!"

About Roy:

Roy currently divides his time between San Francisco, New York, London, and Paris.
He has been a senior executive in the stock brokerage, banking, and high tech industries with pacing organizations like Charles Schwab, Wells Fargo Bank, Oracle, and Citibank.

Roy’s specialty in all these endeavors has been transformation, providing the vision and leadership at the individual, organizational, and community levels to effect major change.

Roy is a citizen of the world. His wide-ranging career has taken him all over the globe as a circus performer, instructor pilot in advanced jets, bush pilot, helicopter pilot, search and rescue mission commander, strategic war planner, stock broker, and senior business executive. Roy has been immersed in many cultures, and has built a strong reputation as a visionary, change agent, and very effective communicator.
