"PARIS PILGRIMAGE TO JIM MORRISON"

Photographer Michelle Campbell, born in Los Angeles and raised in Texas, received an MFA in Photography from the University of Texas. She moved to France in 1989 to pursue various photographic projects, including photographing the grave of Jim Morrison in Peré Lachaise, where he was interred after a sudden death, characteristically surrounded by mystery, in Paris in 1971.

Michelle is currently putting together a book of photographs on Jim Morrison’s resting place. She is also photographing sacred places around France, most notably Chartres Cathedral. She recently had several photographs in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame's (http://www.rockhall.com) exhibit on The Doors, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of "Light My Fire." Between 1989 and 1994, Michelle visited the grave and photographed each day. Now she goes back frequently, has met a lot of Jim Morrison’s friends and has captured many stories.

For Michelle, the door’s music is about Freedom. She was 17 when “Light My Fire” hit the charts at n° 1. Please visit www.thedoors.com (then click on Enter, then Jim Morrison and then His Death).

And we'll Toast Barack Obama's Victory. There'll also be The Doors music.

*JIM MORRISON – A LEGENDARY FIGURE. MILLIONS COME TO PARIS EACH YEAR TO TRY TO CAPTURE A MOMENT

Jim Morrison was an American poet, singer, songwriter, writer, and film director. He is best known as the lead singer and lyricist of The Doors and is widely considered to be one of the most charismatic lead singers in rock music history. He was also the author of several books of poetry and the director of a documentary and short film. Morrison was well known for his baritone voice.

There’s much more to it than that: Morrison remains one of the most popular and influential singers/writers in rock history as The Doors' catalog has become a staple of classic rock radio stations. To this day he is widely regarded as the prototypical rock star: surly, sexy, scandalous and mysterious. The leather trousers he was fond of wearing both on stage and off have since become stereotyped as rock star apparel.

For years, photographer Michelle Campbell has been photographing the scene at Jim Morrison's grave here in Paris. Since his death there in 1971 millions have come from all over the world, making his unpretentious tomb one Paris's top tourist attractions..

JIM MORRISON INFLUENCES

A fine poet and lyricist, Jim was compared to Rimbaud and influenced by:
Friedrich Nietzsche. the poetry of William Blake, Charles Baudelaire and Arthur Rimbaud. Beat Generation writers such as Jack Kerouac and French writer Céline. Céline's book, Voyage au Bout de la Nuit (Journey to the End of the Night) and Blake's Auguries of Innocence both echo through one of Morrison's early songs, "End of the Night".

Morrison's vision of
performance was colored by the works of 20th century French playwright Antonin Artaud (author of Theater and its Double) and by Julian Beck's Living Theater.

Other works relating to
religion, mysticism, ancient myth and symbolism were of lasting interest, particularly Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces. James Frazer's The Golden Bough also became a source of inspiration and is reflected in the title and lyrics of the song "Not to Touch the Earth".

THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME “THE DOORS”

Jim took the band name, The Doors, from Blake's poem, « The Marriage of Heaven and Hell." Blake wrote « if the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear as it is, infinite. Jim was also influenced by Huxley's book, «The Doors of Perception », which recorded Huxley's usage and impressions of mescaline. Morrison added, « there are things known and things unknown and in between are The Doors. »
