"THE LIFE OF A MODERN DAY CHÂTELAINE: HER OWN CHÂTEAU IN BURGUNDY "

From Lara: "Our Motto: Take A Sip Of Burgundy At Château De Percey"

The French word châtelaine means ‘key-holder of a chateau’. Lara Lunow is a 21st century châtelaine who welcomes guests in her manor house. She has realized a dream and at the same time turned her dream into a business, in the French countryside, in Burgundy.

Lara, the daughter of a Dutch antique dealer, came to France to learn French when she was 16 – in a village with a small château. Being there triggered her fantasies and she dreamed of living the life of a princess in a castle. Twenty years later, she learned that her then boyfriend (future husband Pauwl) had the same dream. Together they found a château, built in 1783, in a hamlet in northern Burgundy and turned it into an environment that is welcoming with their own special brand of hospitality.

After beginning restoration, while living temporarily in the Middle East, Lara felt that there was something lacking in the European notion of hospitality and service. She felt that by opening her château to the public, she could make up for that lack and at the same time, the château would reflect her style. She envisioned a warm, stylish, welcoming and comfortable place with contemporary art and modern furniture with antique accents. This, along with the gardens, would be a perfect place for others to come to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends.

Lara, a great cook, who has been a communications consultant and worked in PR and Event Organizing, will share some of her experiences renovating Château de Percey. Work started while she was in France, and continued long distance when she and Pauwl were in Oman and the UK. She is hostess, chef and tourist guide. Laura and Pauwl ( he works in IT) bought the château in 2002 and opened it to the public in 2006. They have converted it into a family living space for themselves and their two children with two holiday gites, which they rent out (one is under construction this winter). There are reception rooms, they serve afternoon tea, have a table d’hôte and host special events. They once housed an art gallery in the château.
