SUNDAY 14 JUNE 2015

"JOIE DE VIVRE Secrets of Wining, Dining, and Romancing Like the French."

Special Guest is Harriet Welty Rochefort, longtime Paris writer, celebrity and Paris icon.

Harriet is the author of “French Toast: An American in Paris Celebrates the Maddening Mysteries of the French, (2010) and French Fried: The Culinary Capers of an American in Paris, (2001). She will now share with us:” JOIE DE VIVRE Secrets of Wining, Dining, and Romancing Like the French."

THE FRENCH: “MAKING TIME FOR LIFE”

When a longtime Paris resident like me hears the title of Harriet’s latest book: “JOIE DE VIVRE Secrets of Wining, Dining, and Romancing Like the French.", I think that “joie de vivre” is something that the French used to have but no longer enjoy.

Before the publication of the book, in a 2012 interview, Harriet said:

“I find that the French still have plenty of joie de vivre. However, there's a disconnect: One poll (at that time) shows that while the French were overwhelmingly depressed about their economy (the number of French on unemployment at that time topped 3 million), 83 percent were immensely happy with their private lives, families, and friends. “

Let’s learn from Harriet what this disconnect is all about. And let's learn more about the attitudes and mysteries of THE FRENCH.

PARIS IN THE JAZZ AGE. THE 1920s SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF AUTHOR LANGSTON HUGHES.

Special Guest is David Burke, Writer, who will speak and introduce a short video clip of filmmaker Joanne Burke, "Jazz Comes To Paris".

Writer Langston Hughes came to Paris, and captured impressions of what he saw in the autobiography of his young years, The Big Sea. As a young expat, he worked as a busboy in the famous Monmartre night club, Le Grand Duc, owned by African American Expat Eugene Bullard, former WWI fighter pilot in the French Air Corp.

At Le Grand Duc, Langston Hughes saw many celebrities of the day, often larger than life figures. Among them were the icon, Josephine Baker, nightclub owner, singer and hostess Bricktop, jazz saxophonist Sidney Bechet, singers Mabel Mercer and Alberta Hunter and singer and stage star Adelaide Hall.

David Burke will present their stories and the stories of others, during an era when Monmartre was considered to be the Harlem of Paris, known for "le hot jazz".

To give us a real feeling for the era, David will introduce a short  8 minute clip  “JAZZ COMES TO PARIS” from director Joanne Burke’s DVD collection: “When African Americans Came to Paris.”

This lively clip contains music of the period. Later in life, Langston Hughes became known as the poet laureate of Harlem, and one of his poems “Jazz Band in a Parisian Cabaret” is recited in the clip.

Brand Management Consultant, Speaker,

Founder Of Homegrown Brand Strategy. www.homegrownbrands.com

Now, you have followers, fans, and subscribers across multiple platforms; this makes the task of building a personal brand more important than ever in today's fast-changing world.

Your brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room; it's how they feel when they hear your name.

It's essentially how your friends, clients, and colleagues perceive you. And face it, perception is reality.

Whether you want to change careers, attract new clients, or start a new business, a strong and clear personal brand is absolutely essential.

This presentation will help you define your value and purpose (your brand) and how to communicate that value to others (your marketing).”

Beco Lichtman, a brand management consultant, speaker, and founder of Homegrown Brand Strategy, created the company on the belief that enduring brands create emotional connections with their target audiences in order to succeed.

About “Love Letters” (Scenes)

Love Letters is a play by A. R. Gurney that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play centers on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III. Using the epistolary form sometimes found in novels, they sit side by side at tables and read the notes, letters and cards – in which over nearly 50 years, they discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats – that have passed between them throughout their separated lives. While Andrew becomes a U.S. senator, Melissa fails as an artist. In the end Melissa kills herself.[1]

Dream Chasers: “Maybe Dreams Can Come True”.

Electra Says:

"Over seven years ago I began an independent film project inspired by gifted filmmaker Joshua Bee Alafia. The journey began with a few simple words, “Hey Love, Let’s Make a Film.” As an actor, I had appeared in character roles for both film and television, but I never imagined myself behind the camera.

Filmmaking is an extremely expensive field that I could not imagine conquering. I remember asking a DP on a film set what it really took to make a film, and he said, “Electra, it takes unyielding desire and passion to tell a story.

My adventure was both challenging and exhilarating. I poured my heart and finances into telling a story that travels through Harlem, New York, Hamburg, Germany and Paris, France."

THE PLOT

"Maybe Dreams Can Come True” is loosely based on events in my life. It is strange and ironic to write these words, but I was at one time considered an expatriate. My history gave me the desire to expose the realities of living away from one's country and culture.

The main character in the film (Chocolat) is a young woman torn between nurturing her love relationship in America, while continuing to explore a booming entertainment career in Europe.

Chocolat is determined to build a transcontinental bridge to maintain both love and career.

The plot evolves into a documentary medium.
Chocolat uses a small video camera as a tool to explore and question her life through. interviewing others. Her questions include, why are her friends abroad? Do they intend to return to their native countries?

We discover some of the common elements that drew them from their homes: economics, political climates, sexual freedom, and much more.

WHY 8 YEARS TO COMPLETE THE FILM?

The answer is in the title, “Maybe Dreams Can Come True.” Artists have a natural longing to express their talent, even simply for themselves privately. But life can bring detours and doubts to a very focused dream. Simple tasks such as eating, paying rent, and supporting family, can become huge obstacles when you merely thirst for creativity. “We all want to make a place in this world, we all want our voices to be heard."

Recently, while standing in line in a Harlem supermarket, I had an epiphany while talking to a customer from Jamaica. During our discussion, he asked me, “What is your film about?” I responded that it was primarily about people like himself. Individuals who have chosen to live away from their country and culture. He stated, “Oh, dream chasers."
