Sunday 10 October 2010

Our Guest Of Honor

MELINDA BLAU

Author (Co-Author)

Melinda Blau, who specializes in relationships and trends, has written a dozen books, including the best-selling "Baby Whisperer" series. She lives in Northampton, Massachuetts.

What the critics have to say about "Consequential Strangers":

"Consequential Strangers" challenges us to rethink our circle of relationships, to widen our horizon of human connection, and to expand the numbers of people to whom we owe debts of gratitude large and small. A mind-expanding and heart-opening book"--Daniel Goleman, author of Social Intelligence.

“The authors make a compelling case that our social constellations are larger and sexier than we realize: Your neighbors will cease to be blurry faces and become nearby stars worth cultivating.” —Kaja Perina, Psychology Today

“Here’s a new and rewarding way to look at all the people we come into contact with.”—Bruce Genaro, Sacramento Book Review

“This book is especially cogent today when so many unemployed are relying on social networking contacts on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, where ‘friends’ most likely aren’t part of an inner circle, but could know of a job not publicly advertised. Anecdotes, television, scholarly studies and Blau and Fingerman’s own experience—they were ‘consequential strangers’ who first met via telephone—illustrate the importance of individuals we often take for granted yet who enrich our lives in ways not immediately noticeable but that could prove highly significant.” —Publishers Weekly

“Our life from birth depends on connections with others. This fascinating book brings to our attention the many subtle yet essential connections we form everyday in myriad ways. It is difficult to feel socially isolated after reading this book.”—John T. Cacioppo, co-author of Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection and director of the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience, University of Chicago

“Blau and Fingerman have discovered -- and navigated -- what's all around us... We're

dancing each day with a host of people who make us stronger by connecting, positioning

and helping us. The periphery is central to our lives.”—Barry Wellman, S.D. Clark professor of sociology and director of NetLab, University of Toronto

“This book will open your eyes to the magnificent complexity which exists beneath the smooth surface of even the most ‘ordinary’ life. I will never again look at my relationships—intimate or casual—in the same way!” —Sue Ellen Cooper, Founder of the Red Hat Society

WELL! I'm impressed.

HOPE THAT YOU ARE HAVING A GREAT 15 AUGUST!

We're taking the day/night off.

When we were awakened by loud bells in the distance and angelic voices this morning, I thought - well, maybe I've passed on, am in heaven and don't know yet. Thank God that doggie Eve came too. But it was the loudspeakers from Notre Dame, ringing out (bells) and singing praises on this special day.

It brought to mind memories of my handsome, great Uncle John, an itinerant Minister who travelled the Midwest and the South with his Bible, teaching people about the Bible, having Revivals, Baptising people and converting them to Methodism.

Enjoy this special day (although rainy)! See you on Sunday the 22nd of August

All my best.

Patricia

Sunday 1 August 2010 19h00 - 23h00ish

Happy Hour. Dinner & Dessert. Janet's Presentation. More Great Socializing.

Our Guest of Honor

Janet Hulstrand Writer and Expert On Champagne

LET'S DRINK CHAMPAGNE, KEEP COOL AND THINK OF THE CHAMPAGNE REGION Writer Janet Hustrand conducts "Writing From The Heart" workshops" in Champagne Essoyes. What a fascinating region that creates bubbly but also creativity: It inspired Pierre-August Renoir and Jean Renoir among others.

Let's learn about the region in fabulous images and also about Janet's writing workshops. And drink champagne And it's the anniversary of Patricia's arrival in Paris years ago. (August 1st. No idea that I would still be here now)

From Janet: "I think what I should focus on the region (especially l'Aube), about which I have written recently: http://www.bonjourparis.com/story/two-hours-paris-world-apart-laube-en-champagne

So the main focus of my talk would be this absolutely wonderful, and somewhat undervisited, area of France that is just a couple of hours away from Paris..I will talk about the region (l'Aube),
I will talk about some cool places to visit there (including but not limited to fun places to visit where champagne is made) and I will talk a little bit about Essoyes, village beloved by the Renoirs...and a very little bit about the class I will be holding there in October..."

Sounds good to me! - Patricia

MORE BOSSA NOVA. HOMAGE TO ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM (TOM JOBIM) A FATHER OF BOSSA NOVA AND MODERN BRASILIAN MUSIC

Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim

Guitarist and vocalist YVES LE Goff will interpret the songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim, a founder of BOSSA NOVA who launched such international stars as Astrud Gilberto.

Yves, who plays guitar and sings, dedicates his musical life to Jobim. It’s a passion that just happened. He can’t explain it. He says that some musicians dedicate themselves to Bach or Mozart and he dedicates himself to Jobim.

When I first spoke with Yves about Gobim, I confessed that I didn’t know anything about him. Then I googled and I found the story of an amazingly talented songwriter and vocalist who wrote songs for “Orfeo Negro” (“Black Orpheus”- including “Someone To Light Up My Life”), collaborated with Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto on one of the best selling jazz albums of all time, “Getz/Gilberto” and who wrote songs that launched the Bossa Nova movement/style: “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Corcovado”. These songs made Astrud Gilberto an international sensation and “The Girl from Ipanema” was record of the year in 1964. They endured. (Grammy awards). We all still sing them.

I looked at photos which show a strikingly handsome young man and a gorgeously cute older
hom you can't help but adore.

Jobim's musical roots were planted firmly in the work of Pixinguinha, the legendary musician and composer who began modern Brazilian music in the 1930s. Among his teachers were Lúcia Branco, and, from 1941 on, Hans-Joachim Koellreutter. Jobim was also influenced by the French composers Claude Debussy and Ravel, and by Jazz. Among many themes, his lyrics talked about love, self discovery, betrayal, joy and especially about the birds and natural wonders of Brazil, like the "Mata Atlântica" forest, characters of Brazilian folklore like Matita Pereira (Saci Pererê), and his home city of Rio de Janeiro (His childhood neighborhood was Ipanema). His family, of French origin, emigrated to Brazil in the17th century.

There are many sites. I liked www.jobin.com.br

Visit Patricia's website - http://www.parissoirees.com/

For Expats of all origins, French and Visitors. (All Ages)

THIS SUNDAY WILL BE ANOTHER GREAT MUSICAL EVENING!

"Sultry Songs For A Summer Evening: A Good Song Tells A Story!"

Sunday 11 July at 19h00. In the Latin Quarter. m° St Michel (Details with reservation)

Our Special Guest will be:

CONNIE FREDERICKS MALONE

Vocalist

In the states, Connie spent 20 years performing in musical theatre,
day-time and prime-time television, commercials and cabaret/night club
venues. Her first love is singing, and she possesses a powerful four
octave range. A versatile performer, Connie sings gospel, jazz standards

and r&b soul favorites. She especially loves the intimacy of the cabaret
club performance setting. It was in the cabaret rooms of Manhattan where
she honed her nightclub performance skills and settled on a repertoire of
songs that has remained close to her heart.
Connie feels this way about her material:

“A good song tells a story. The story must resonate in the heart and soul.

As an actress I am attracted to the drama in a song. The arrangement and
melody may draw my attention to a particular work, but it is the lyrics,
the story, that compel me to sing it. ”

Currently, Connie and her husband, Jim, reside in the
Finger Lakes region of New York State where she performs frequently.

Hope to see you then! Patricia

"FRANK SINATRA AND THE RAT PACK IN LAS VEGAS " And Stories Of Other Entertainers In Las Vegas (Including Marilyn Monroe)

*(The Rat Pack: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr , Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford)

Former Casino boss Ed Walters originally answered emails about Frank Sinatra on The Frank Sinatra Mailing List (known as the Temple list). These stories were called The Pit Boss Replies, because they were in direct response to questions someone from The Temple List would ask Ed. Many found it fascinating to hear first-hand how Sinatra and his friends really behaved at The Sands. New The Pit Boss Replies stories appear to this day on The Temple List and on The Voice Mailing List (an invitation-only group).

Author Tom Rendour asked Ed if he could share these stories with cyber fans via his Songs By Sinatra website: www.songsbysinatra.com. Ed agreed, and now they are there for everyone to enjoy.

The bulk of these Stories From Vegas are as they appeared originally on The Sinatra Mailing List

Stories you have never heard before that will give you a better understanding of what made Sinatra tick

Please visit: www.songsbysinatra.com

And we hope that Ed will share how he became the model for "Fast Eddie" (Film: "The Hustler" 1961. Paul Newman's role).- Patricia

NOTE: ( The Rat Pack is the nickname given to a group of popular entertainers most active between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s. Its most famous line-up featured Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, who appeared together in films and on stage in the early-1960s. Despite its reputation as a masculine group, the Rat Pack did have female participants, including movie icons Shirley MacLaine, Lauren Bacall, Angie Dickinson, Marilyn Monroe, and Judy Garland.
