Hope Shines:

Hope Shines is an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) through educational and health and hygiene programs. Michael has been affiliated with the group in Rwanda. He is now developing a business aiding orphans there.Visit http://hopeshines.org/who-we-are/

In New York, Michael was “yearning for something more meaningful in my life, and felt called to be somewhere far and exotic, like the south of India.  It was then that I met the founder of Hope Shines” who told him about the volunteer summer camp program. After that experience, ” I knew my life's trajectory had just flipped a 180.”

“Hope Shines has a new greenhouse outside Kigali where we're growing red peppers and soon butternut squash to sell at market and hotels.  I've been working on a social entrepreneurship of handmade soap which will be targeted to boutique hotels.  These both will help bring revenue streams to the organization, helping to sustain it.  The kids themselves have been learning traditional Rwandan dance, and have gotten so good that they've performed at a couple weddings.  They will continue to perform in public, and hopefully the money earned from these events will eventually pay for their school fees.” 

Living In Rwanda (Kagali). Starting A Business To Support Orphans And Being An Expat.

It was a natural organic progression after he had the idea of starting a soap business in Rwanda. Michael originally intended to start the business in NY, with proceeds going to Hope Shines, and then bring it to Rwanda.” Earlier this year , “I knew I had to go to Rwanda to start the business and bring that model back to NY. I knew that ultimately I wanted to be living in Rwanda, as I'd always loved it and the people were so warm and welcoming, not to mention many friends I'd made over the years. “ 

Rwanda is very welcoming to visitors.  There's a big expat community, which I'm not so much involved with.  They're here for their jobs, mostly, and will hang out at the expensive restaurants and night clubs.  But people on the street in my area are always friendly, and adults and children alike will greet me with a Hello or Bonjour. 

The political climate is good.  The president just got voted into an historic 3rd term because he had saved the country during the genocide, and people love him here.  He's not only kept the country safe and peaceful, but it's now known for its development and progress.  There's so much infrastructure improvements, and new buildings and hotels are going up all over.  There's also a beautiful new convention center and shopping malls.  So there are many improvements, yet still so much poverty." 

About Michael Stromme:

Michael has been an actor, teacher, and massage therapist in Los Angeles, Rome, Paris, and New York.  Having been moved and inspired by a strong purpose and calling in Rwanda, he now finds himself in the world of philanthropy and social entrepreneurship, supporting a group of orphans through an organization for which he volunteers and had served on its board.  That support has led him to start a handmade soap business in Rwanda, with proceeds supporting the organization and the children

Redhot & Blue, usually shortened to Redhot, is Yale University's oldest coeducational a cappella group.

Founded in 1977, the group has released many albums and toured around the United States and the world. Repertoire for the group is based in the jazz genre, though many of their arrangements stray from this. Redhot is a member of the Singing Group Council of Yale.

The group's name is derived from the musical Red, Hot and Blue (1936), written by Yale alumnus Cole Porter, class of 1913. The group name combines Redhot into one word and uses an ampersand, unlike the show. Cole Porter's work is featured often in Redhot's repertoire, from Antoinette Birby, written when he was in college, to more popular songs like "It's De-Lovely", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Night And Day", and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye".

CHARLES REESE will bring his unique theatrical experience of poetry/spoken word, prose and history-telling to re-ignite the fiery spirit of the
legendary writer and expatriate, James Arthur Baldwin (1924 -1987).

"James Baldwin was an African-American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet and social critic. His essays, as collected in
 Notes of a Native Son  (1955), explore palpable yet unspoken intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, most notably in mid-20th-century

America, and their inevitable if unnameable tensions.[1] Some Baldwin essays are book-length, for instance The Fire Next Time (1963), 
No Name in the Street (1972),

and The Devil Finds Work (1976). His second novel isGiovanni's Room, written in 1956 well before gay rights were widely espoused in America.[2] " (Source: Wikipedia.org)

James Baldwin is a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.

Charles Reese is a professional performance artist who works in theater, television, independent film, voice-overs and micro web series.

Reese is best known for his critically acclaimed Off-Broadway performance in "James Baldwin: A Soul on Fire" by the late playwright Howard B. Simon.

He is editor of the playbook "James Baldwin: A Soul on Fire" (Glover Lane Press, 2011) and a contributing writer to James Baldwin: Challenging

Authors (Sense Publishers, 2014). Reese has been selected to present at the International James Baldwin Conference at The American University of Paris. May 26-28, 2016.

"Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald In Paris: A Turbulent Friendship.”

"After the publication of The Great Gatsby in the spring of 1925 ­­ the peak of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s work as a novelist – he and his wife Zelda came to Paris. Within days he tracked down Ernest Hemingway in Montmartre, and a complicated relationship developed.

Fitzgerald, then 28, was the most famous young fiction writer in America,while Hemingway, three years his junior, was a novice with only a small number of stories having been published by two presses in Paris. But Scott had read and admired them and he wanted young Hem to connect with his own publisher, Scribner’s, the tops in the US for fiction. Despite their drastically different personalities and styles of life they became friends and literary mates. In the following year, 1926, Scott put a huge effortinto helping Hem with his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, by offering important suggestions for changes in the manuscript ­­ which Hem accepted – and conniving with Hem in a nasty ploy of Hem’s to get the book away from a publisher in New York to which Hem was now under contract and get it over to Scott’s brilliant Maxwell Perkins at Scribner’s. Which worked.

So why did Hemingway see fit to trash the image of his long­dead friend Scott in A Moveable Feast, Hem’s late­1950s memoir of his “very poor and very happy” early years in Paris?

The twists and turns of this question we will explore at Paris Soirées."

ABOUT DAVID BURKE:

David Burke is a writer, filmmaker, and literary tour guide based in Paris since 1986. A Connecticut native, he studied at the Taft School and Yale and after military service went to New York to work in documentary films. There he worked on programs for PBS, ABC, NBC, and mainly CBS News, writing and producing for Walter Cronkite, Charles Kuralt,Dan Rather and Ed Bradley on 60 MINUTES.

In 1986 he and his filmmaker wife Joanne Burke took a year­long sabbatical in Paris, and stayed on. David wrote magazine articles, travel pieces for HarperCollins, two editions of their ACCESS PARIS guide, MEDITERRANEAN FRANCE for Globe Pequot Press, and WRITERS IN PARIS, a labor of love, published by Counterpoint Press, Berkeley, in 2008. It launched David’s popular series of literary walks, WRITERS IN PARIS WALKING TOURS.

After passing the Canadian Bar, Robert travelled extensively in Europe. While in Paris in the early 1980s, he was the managing editor of English-language magazine Passion, The Magazine of Paris. Singer.Songwriter.Screenwriter. Novelist.

Susan Sisko Carter has written teleplays for some of the major producers in television, including David Simon, Gavin Palone, and David Chase. She has written feature films for Disney and United Artists, and is a recipient of the Luminas Award from Women in Film. As a singer-songwriter, she has recorded for Verve and Epic, under the name: Susan Carter. In 2008, a song, which she co-wrote, was featured on Broadway in Chazz Palminteri’s A Bronx Tale. She is pleasantly at work on a new album. Her smoky, sensual tune, “Sipping Wine in Paris,” a short story set to music, features piano accompaniment by film composer/sometimes-guest-conductor for the Moscow Philharmonic, Terry Plumeri. The song will be available, soon ... in conjunction with her debut novel: "I Want Your Husband".

"I Want Your Husband" was inspired by Susan’s experience living in a hotel, in West Hollywood, for two-and-a-half years. She began the book in the hotel. And finished it in Paris where she resides whenever possible.
