SHANNON CAIN

Of

"His Place In Provence,"
whose mission is to protect, acquire and renovate James Baldwin's former home in Provence and to convert it to a residence for artists and writers.

A Conversation about L'Ancienne Maison Baldwin,

Internationally acclaimed writer and cultural icon James Baldwin found a second home in France, and he was granted the country’s highest order of merit,
the Legion d’Honneur, in 1986.

And yet today, Baldwin’s sole geographic legacy, the house in St. Paul-de-Vence where he lived for seventeen years until his death, is under threat. The land speculation company that owns the house and its ten surrounding acres has plans to install eighteen luxury condos on the property...

James Baldwin’s unflinching analysis of tormented dynamics that continue to plague Western societies, combined with his manifold literary gifts, have made him an increasingly inspirational figure both in the United States and throughout the English-speaking world.

And he deserves far greater stature in France, both as one of the archetypal American expats—in the same pantheon as Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Stein—and as a distinctly Black writer whose words speak with more currency than ever to the ongoing struggle for equality in our increasingly fractured societies..

The time is ripe for a Franco-American collaboration that would preserve his longtime home, much of which remains salvageable. This estate is the most logical site for a center devoted to promoting the art and ideas that unite us all—a residence for writers, a gathering venue for thinkers and activists, and a place to pay homage and reflect on the achievement that was James Baldwin’s remarkable life.

Tom McKenzie is originally from New York and has had an international career for 30 plus years playing in a wide variety of venues: churches, theatres, concerts, festivals, recording studios. He has also been a street musician. He has worked in the US, Europe Africa and the Caribbean.

ANGELIQUE

Multi-lingual singer-songwriter Angélique Music has been making music as long as she can remember. She has memories of standing on stage at the age
of four singing at the top of her lungs while enjoying the applause of her kindergarten class.

Graduating college at the age of 19 with a degree in French in addition to minors in Music and Spanish, Angélique Music has achieved amazing success
as an independent artist due to her “Neo Soul with a Touch of Funk” music being embraced by over 10,000 fans and hundreds of radio stations.

Her soulful voice and live performances are passionate, and she has played just about every imaginable venue --from amphitheaters to community
theaters, festivals to churches; from sidewalk cafes to busking along the Seine in Paris and from the House of Blues to numerous international music
events in places like France, Japan, London, and Australia.

America, and their inevitable if unnameable tensions.[1] Some Baldwin essays are book-length, for instance The Fire Next Time (1963),
No Name in the Street
 (1972),

and The Devil Finds Work (1976). His second novel isGiovanni's Room, written in 1956 well before gay rights were widely espoused in America.[2] " (Source: Wikipedia.org)

 "POLLY VOUS FRANCAIS?”
Loving, Living In...And Leaving Paris.

Our Special Guest:

Polly Lyman
A Well Known American Francophile And Blogger

A lifelong francophile and recovering French literature major, Polly Freeman Lyman first visited Paris in 1973 and, smitten, spent the next 30-odd years failing at trying to masquerade as a Frenchwoman in the US.

This included stints smoking Gauloises and even wearing espadrilles in the heart of New England winter. And included voluminous quantities of Dijon mustard.

In the process she wrote and edited newsletters for French non-profits and commandeered every American-based French committee she could.

Next she settled on the Left Bank of Paris, where she authored  “Polly Vous Francais?” a  blog with 250,000 annual hits worldwide, which was honored by Budget Travel as one of the top ten expat Paris blogs.

Now a resident of Newport, Rhode Island, she is working on her memoir, “How to Not Become a Parisienne in 12 Easy Lessons.”

"WELCOME TO THE LOVE CONNECTION"

Our Special Guest Is Bassist Tom McKenzie

Tom Is Inspired By And Really Works With The Audience.

Let's enjoy the bass as a solo instrument, on her own. Jazz. Pop. Improvisations.

Says Tom:

"La Contrebasse.  La Grand-mère.  String bass.  Bass fiddle.  Double bass.  Bull bass.  Bass viol.

She is called by many names and her function in any musical ensemble is to, "basically", lay down the groove: provide the bottom (base) of the harmony and rhythm.

But, her melodic range is broad, and she can sing you to tears as well as make you feel that thump in your rump.

We'll try to do those things (and more) with a few "Silly Love Songs" pour les amoureux.

Tom McKenzie is originally from New York and has had an international career for 30 plus years playing in a wide variety of venues: churches, theatres, concerts, festivals, recording studios. He has also been a street musician. He has worked in the US, Europe Africa and the Caribbean.

Tom is a real pro. It'll be a pleasure to listen to him on his own.

ccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc

It's €25.00 (EXACT CHANGE) for a fun dinner.

A fun dinner, a great topic, meeting and networking with, fun, new international people.
