TOMMIE MCKENZIE

Says Tom about his instrument:

"La Contrebasse.  La Grand-mère.  String bass.  Bass fiddle.  Double bass.  Bull bass.  Bass viol.

She is called by many names and her function in any musical ensemble is to, "basically", lay down the groove: provide the bottom (base) of the harmony and rhythm.

But, her melodic range is broad, and she can sing you to tears as well as make you feel that thump in your rump."

Tom McKenzie is originally from New York and has had an international career for 30 plus years playing in a wide variety of venues: churches, theatres, concerts, festivals, recording studios. He has also been a street musician. He has worked in the US, Europe Africa and the Caribbean.

90+ Ways You Know You're Becoming French”

(with contributions by FUSAC co-owner Lisa Vanden Bos and beautiful illustrations by Hungarian artist Judit Halasz).

Our Special Guests Are:

Shari Leslie Segall

Author and Founding Director of "Foreign Affairs"

Tom McKenzie
Bassist
Jazz, Pop

SAYS SHARI:

"The French say that foreigners can never truly “become” French--no matter what legal status is inscribed upon what identity papers they carry around in

their France-based wallets. Nor might newly minted citizens or official residents wish to swap their own cultural manners and mentalities for those of the local

waiter who serves them their morning café au lait et croissant (to say nothing of totally being able to). But if you’re here long enough, your adaptation mirrors

those Escher drawings where columns of black geese or fish on the left fly or swim straight across the page, migrating and mutating by imperceptible degrees,

melting into and finally becoming their white counterparts on the right. To a greater or lesser degree, whether you expected to or not, one day you realize that

you’re crossing to the other side. How do you know that you’ve arrived?

We're going to have fun with this one!

Shari Leslie Segall will come with her very popular (already in its third printing) little book,
90+ Ways You Know You're Becoming French” (with

contributions by FUSAC co-owner Lisa Vanden Bos and beautiful illustrations by Hungarian artist Judit Halasz). Participants will call out a number. Shari will
µ
turn to that "way of becoming French" in the book and read it. Participants will then reflect upon and discuss how "French" they have (or haven't) become on

this particular point. (There have already been on-line "competitions" among readers as to how many becoming-French criteria they have met.)

Books will be available for signing and purchase (with two euros off the selling price for Paris Soirées participants).

Shari Leslie Segall, in Paris since 1985 and author of France-themed books and articles, has taught English and cross-cultural communication at the

prestigious Institut des Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po) and teaches at the French Military Academy. She is the founding director of Foreign Affairs, which

provides linguistic and cross-cultural training and creates English-language documents for executives.

Address: At a trendy and fun venue - a French bistro in the Marais -  just behind BHV. at the metro Hotel de Ville (ligne 1).

GREAT FRENCH BISTRO FOOD. We'll confirm the exact address details with the reservation!

It's €25.00 (EXACT CHANGE) for a fun dinner. NEW GREAT FORMULA: Dinner is 2 wonderful courses and includes a glass of wine.
All additional beverages must be ordered from and paid for directly to the bistro.

IF YOU BRING 5 PEOPLE, YOU CAN COME FOR FREE!

"FRENCH WAR BRIDES: MADEMOISELLE & THE AMERICAN SOLDIER."
Living The American Dream.

 Our Special Guests are:

Hilary Kaiser
Author, Oral historian. Former Associate Professor Intercultural Communication,
University of Paris

Tommie McKenzie
Bassist
Jazz. Pop.

Following both World War I and II, about 6,500 Franco-American marriages took place between
French mademoiselles and American soldiers, be they "doughboys" or GI's.

These women, who came from different parts of France and diverse background, would later
cross the Atlantic to join husbands,
settle in various corners of America, suffer culture shock, and adapt to marriage
in a foreign land of postwar plenty with varying degrees of success.

Despite these difficulties, like many other immigrants, they got on with it and survived.

As the compelling oral histories in this book show, most of them did, in their own way,
live the American dream.

Says Hiiary:
I wish to share with a wide audience the engaging stories of French war brides of WWI and WWII,
as well as the historical context of the period. I have brought out a new paperback
and email edition of the book I originally published in French. Its new title is
French War Brides: Mademoiselle & the American Soldier
."

Hilary Kaiser, Ph.D. is an oral historian and an associate professor
emerita of intercultural communication at the University of Paris.
She is also the author of WWII Voices: American GI’s and the French Women
Who Married Them and Souvenirs de Vétérans.

A dual American-French national,
she currently divides her time between
Paris, France and Berkeley, California.

Address: At our friends trendy and beautiful Marais apartment at the metro Hotel de Vlle, (Ligne 1) . We'll confirm the exact address details with the reservation!

“PRESENTING THE FABULOUS MARAIS: GENTRIFICATION."

 Our Special Guests are:

Pascal Fonquernie
Editorial Director and Founder of www.parismarais.com

Tommie McKenzie
Bassist
Jazz. Pop.

Pascal Fonquernie conceived PARISMARAIS.COM and will tell us a little about recent Marais history, it's throbbing new aliveness today. And it's GENTRIFICATION.

Pascal is the creator of Parismarais tourist media and has lived in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris
since 1987. Fascinated by history and architecture, he created Le Marais tour guide
with a group of friends in 2005. Le Parisien daily Paris Paper named him
«the ambassador of Le Marais» and not only has it stuck, it suits him perfectly.

The site is a member of the Office du Tourisme de Paris and is the partner of
dozens of tourist guides and tourism organizations all over the world.

He contributes largely to a tourism outreach regarding Le Marais
in particular the 3rd arrondissement, where 70% of the
historic buildings of Le Marais can be found.

Says Pascal:
“I am the defender of the spirit of Le Marais, and fight against the globalization
that brings nothing but uniformity. I promote  authentic places that are
our roots and our expertise.

If we are the most visited area of the
most visited city in the world,
it is due to this unique and authentic aspect. “

PARISMARAIS.COM produces the only map of the Marais in English which can be downloaded. http://www.parismarais.com/map/uk.php

ABOUT MICHELE-LOUISE RIDLEY-COOK AND LA BONNE VIVANTE:

La Bonne Vivante online image gallery features images predominately from the 1800s to the 1940s. There are photos of African American families, church groups, children and couples. There is professional portraiture; there are many vernacular and “found” photographs.

There are cabinet card photos, RPPCs, cartes de visite, and tintypes. African Americans, from myriad locales, rural and urban, are always the focal point. For events, photos, video clips, and documents can be accompanied by the music of your choice.

La BonneVivante can artistically render, customized, personalized,  photo-musical retrospectives, perfect for adding meaning and fax to weddings, graduations, birthday and anniversary celebrations, reunions, memorials—every type of  personal, corporate or other organizational milestones and events. Great for collectors.

Michele-Louise Ridley-Cook, originally from Scotch Plains, N.J. and now Fairfax County Virginia, was formerly a management consultant with Booze Allen Hamilton and Pricewater House Coopers before she found her true calling as a collector and dealer of African American memorabilia and ephemera. ABOUT VIDA CORNELIOUS:

Vida had always wanted to come to Paris to study  Floral Flower arrangements. Paris represents the top of the top in the field.

Before beginning a career in advertising, Vida had owned a flower shop and it had always been her dream to study with one of the top persons in that field. But she was overcome by doubts and fears. She created obstacles for herself which she eventually overcame. She’ll tell us how.

She is taking a course in Paris with Catherine Muller, who has a celebrated floral arrangement school and uses a romantic, organic, Province approach in which the flower arrangement follows the natural movement of the flowers. Studying with Catherine Muller represents a triumph and the fulfillment of a dream for Vida. Almost  blocked by obstacles that she created for herself. She will share thoughts about conditioned fear and overcoming it. And how this led her,  although not an Paris resident, to the ultimate Expat experience.

SAYS VIDA:

If there is anything I am learning on this Paris adventure, it's the power of the 3Fs. Well, if you are asking what those are, it's this simple statement: "Freedom From Fear."

As I've gotten older, I'm seeing more clearly that FEAR is the biggest enemy of mankind. It's not time, or money, or access, it's the unwillingness to let go of our obsession with controlling the unknown -- feeding the beast of a what-could-go-wrong mentality vs. embracing the possibility of all that could actually go right

HAVING THE COURAGE TO DECIDE TO COME TO PARIS:

“But I then I woke up one day with a plan and I just pulled the trigger. No worries. What's for you is for you right? And this was definitely "for me" because all aligned and I’m here.

…having a great time, learning more about something I love, meeting new people from around the world, and "fitting in" just fine. I really can't imagine NOT being here. Passing this class up would have been yet another missed opportunity, and I didn't want that kind of regret…

THERE'S NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF.”

 VIDA’S CONCUSION:

“Maybe I just discovered the real reason Paris is called the "city of lights" is because what actually shines here, is you.”

Vida is another true lover of Paris!
