“Paris Odyssey: Romare Bearden, Henri Matisse, Homer.”The Inspiration And Adventure That Led To The Realization Of This Paris Exhibition.

(Exhibition to open January 19 at 18h30 at Reid Hall. Invitation to follow separately)

Special Guest is Robert O’Meally Columbia University’s Zora Neale Hurston Professor of English and Comparative Literature who conceived and curated the show.

Bob O’Meally will speak of what led to the Paris segment of the exhibition he conceived and curated on the legendary African-American artist, Romare Bearden.

The show is a modified version of the of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition "Romare Bearden's A Black Odyssey" that Bob also curated and that is currently at the Wallach Gallery on Columbia University's campus in New York.

"Paris Odyssey" is the first stop of a global tour that will also include Istanbul. There are Bearden's collages and watercolors based on Homer's epic poems the Odyssey and the Iliad. In Paris, his work will be paired with that of Henri Matisse, the French master, who was one of Bearden's primary artistic influences. (Bearden studied in Paris after WWII.)

Bearden's Odyssey and Iliad series will hang side-by-side with Matisse's own Odyssean sketches, as well as Matisse's well-known Jazz collages.  There will also be the  Paris Blues series, based on his memory of his time in Paris during the 1950s.

“Bearden not only staked a claim to the tales of ancient Greece as having modern relevance, he also made the claim of global cultural collage—that as humans, we are all collages of our unique experiences,” said O’Meally.

Romare Bearden, The Artist:

Born in Charlotte, N.C., Bearden moved with his family to Harlem as a young child, part of the migration of African Americans from the South to greater opportunity in the North.

Throughout his career, Bearden created images of the lives of travelers on their way to and from home, a theme powerfully explored in his “Odysseus Series.”

Bearden, a graduate of New York University, worked in a studio in Harlem. He returned to Paris in 1950, after serving in WWII on the European front, and studied Art History and Philosophy at the Sorbonne. During this experience his style evolved more towards abstractionism, making him an important figure in post WWII aims at Avant-Garde American Art.

Upon his death in 1988, his works were dispersed across the world. This show presents an opportunity to see many important works reunited.

Address: At a beautiful and fun apartment in the center of Paris. We'll confirm the exact address details with the reservation!

"Nepal Street Portraits: Life and Celebration"

Special Guest Is : Peter Schlipf, Photographer And Lover Of Paris.

My guest this Sunday will be noted German/American photographer PETER SCHLIPF, who will present an illustrated talk about his month-long visit to Nepal in October. As he summarized it for me:

“The month of October isn't considered the "high" season in Nepal for nothing. The monsoons are over and the climate is at it's best. Hundreds of thousands from around the world take to the Himalayas, and 2 of the most important Hindu festivals of the year;
Dashain and Tihar: "The Festival Of Light" (also know as Diwali in India) take place.
I will be presenting a photographic perspective of life, tradition and ritual on the streets in Kathmandu, as I experienced it there during my recent month long visit.”

Many of his pictures, including those from Nepal (and from Paris), can be seen on his Facebook Page. Other examples of his work are at hisweb site. In 2012 he presented a striking collection of photos of Berlin at a downtown Paris gallery.

These are compellingly beautiful images. Fascinating insights into another culture.

Special Guest Is : Roy Camblin: CEO, Writer, Author, Social Activist ,Artist, Circus Performer, Pilot.

(How Roy Began And Succeeded In Several Careers. Lessons. Insights.)

This presentation will be very personal in nature, an interactive dialog with Roy Camblin, on a memoir, his latest literary project.

Roy has led a life of adventure that has taken him all over the globe, in a wide variety of ever changing roles. I’ve always been fascinated by his story, so I invited him to come and speak candidly about his life and times…early life in war ravaged Japan and postwar Turkey; formative years in the American Deep South and Far South West.
Coming of age during the sexual revolution of the sixties (his circus years), and disco era of the seventies (his years in aviation); his earning years, as a high profile executive at pacing organizations like Schwab, Wells Fargo, Oracle, and Citigroup, charged with effecting change and leading organizations through major transition; and the twilight years, what he’s doing now, and his forward trajectory.

While telling his story, Roy will share some of the insights and perspectives that have made him successful in most endeavors.

It promises to be a memorable evening!

"Jean Paul Sartre And Simone de Beauvoir's Cafe Life.”
(Sociability As Philosophy)

Special Guest Is : Scott Haine: Expert On Paris Cafes, Author Of Several Delightful Books On The Subject. He is a Historian Of Food And Sociability.

Scott currently teaches at the University of Maryland University College. His previous books include the outstanding: "The World of the Paris Café: Sociability among the French Working Class, 1789-1914." His latest book is “The Thinking Space".

The cafe is not only a place to enjoy a cup of coffee, it is also a space - distinct from its urban environment - in which to reflect and take part in intellectual debate. Since the eighteenth century in Europe, intellectuals and artists have gathered in cafes to exchange ideas, inspirations and information that has driven the cultural agenda for Europe and the world. Without the café, would there have been a Karl Marx or a Jean-Paul Sartre?

Scott's subject is fascinatng and he’s a very enthusiastic speaker!

"Dining Out in Paris – What You Need to Know before You Get to the City of Light"

Special Guest is Tom Reeves, Longtime Paris Expatriate. Tom Reeves is the author of two books about Paris :  Paris Insights – An Anthology and  Dining Out in Paris - What You Need to Know before You Get to the City of Lighand co-founder and president of Discover Paris.

Tom wrote Dining Out In Paris...so that travelers would not make the same mistakes he once made when visiting Paris.

From Tom:

"The overall mistake was assuming that French people have the same habits as Americans when it comes to eating out!

I wrote Dining Out in Paris to convey how dining culture France is different from dining culture in the United States.  I want to encourage American travelers to be open to a different dining experience than what they know at home.  For example, the fact that a waiter does not return to your table time and time again to ask if everything is O.K. does not mean that French waiters are indifferent to you.  It means that they are leaving you alone to enjoy the meal.

As a bonus, Dining Out in Paris contains reviews of twelve restaurants at which I greatly enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, and the service.  I thought that American travelers would appreciate knowing the names of a few good medium-priced restaurants that are off the tourist track where they could enjoy a fine meal."

Dining Out in Paris attained best-seller status in four Amazon.com categories –

#1 on Kindle Store in Travel Food & Lodging Dining, #1 in Dining Travel Reference,

#2 in Travel Europe France, and #3 in Travel Food, Lodging & Transportation Dining.
