A New Look At Jean-Paul Sartre And Simone de Beauvoir:

Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir are the Bonny and Clyde of Philosophy.
They are both iconic Parisians who used to hang out in the mythical Café de Flore in Saint-Germain des Prés.

Jean-Paul Sartre invented Existentialism and Simone de Beauvoir was one of the inventors of modern feminism.
But behind the legends, were two human beings whose secrets and complexities were discovered after their deaths.

During their a 50 year union, they each had many affairs and laisons, which they recounted to each other daily, in detail, in cafés. Some see their relationships as liberated. Others see them as depraved. How did they each feel about these relationships? How did these relationships influence their work and legacies?

When such brilliant people fall in love, it makes for a fascinating love story.

Edith de Belleville is a tour guide in Paris and organizes guided visits related to great moments in French history, particularly pertaining to French women. She is also a lawyer and a certified French teacher to foreigners. She is prolific and has written many articles and recently did a radio program with an Australian journalist about Simone de Beauvoir

"Jean Paul Sartre And Simone de Beauvoir's Cafe Life.”
(Sociability As Philosophy)

Special Guest Is : Scott Haine: Expert On Paris Cafes, Author Of Several Delightful Books On The Subject. He is a Historian Of Food And Sociability.

Scott currently teaches at the University of Maryland University College. His previous books include the outstanding: "The World of the Paris Café: Sociability among the French Working Class, 1789-1914." His latest book is “The Thinking Space".

The cafe is not only a place to enjoy a cup of coffee, it is also a space - distinct from its urban environment - in which to reflect and take part in intellectual debate. Since the eighteenth century in Europe, intellectuals and artists have gathered in cafes to exchange ideas, inspirations and information that has driven the cultural agenda for Europe and the world. Without the café, would there have been a Karl Marx or a Jean-Paul Sartre?

Scott's subject is fascinatng and he’s a very enthusiastic speaker!

Our Guest of Honor:

Ted Welch

Photographer. Philosopher.

Ted Welch will tell us, accompanied by his photos, about the remarkable lives of French icons Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, their long-lasting but open relationship, their affairs, their philosophy and politics. We will have an excellent glimpse of the intellectual and political life of France and the wider world in the second half of the 20th century. We’ll see photos of Sartre and de Beauvoir, the places in Paris where they grew up, studied and socialized, and which modern day Paris identifies them with.

Ted Welch, a photographer and philosopher, went to art school in London, studied film history and theory, and completed a degree in philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London. He was a lecturer in media history and theory at the University of Westminster, London, teaching students who went on to careers in photography, film and television. After retirement he moved to Paris, where, at one of Patricia's soirees, he met his current partner, and they now live in Nice on the French Riviera (though he makes regular visits to Paris, which he adores).

Ted now devotes himself to photography and has recently begun to paint again, getting back into his stride by doing copies for his partner of Gustave Moreau's "Galatea" and Caspar David Friedrich's "The Wanderer Above a Sea of Fog".

DONATION €20 and ANY social or business card or brochure , if you have one. Thanks for exact change.
