"THE BAD GIRLS AND BOYS OF LITERATURE IN PARIS: GERTRUDE STEIN AND HER ENTOURAGE. "
Sunday 2 October 2011
19h15 - 23h00ish
(Happy Hour. Dinner and Dessert. David's Presentation. More Great Socializing)
Our Guest of Honor David Burke Author of "Writer's In Paris" Filmmaker
Gertrude Stein came to her brother Leo's Paris atelier in 1903 where she began her lifelong passion for art and her writing career. Her writing style was deeply influenced by what the painters she admired were doing; particularly by Picasso. The experience of Picasso painting the portrait of her in 1906, signaled both the beginning of Cubism in Modern Art and and modern literature in her writing. Gertrude Stein had relationships with other writers during the 1920s: James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Sherwood Anderson and most notably, Ernest Hemingway. About David Burke David Burke is a writer, documentary filmmaker, and former television journalist, most notably at CBS News, on two series with Walter Cronkite, The 21st Century and Walter Cronkite Reports, and as a writer/producer on 60 Minutes, working with Dan Rather and Ed Bradley. He also worked on documentaries for ABC, NBC, PBS, and other companies in New York. Since 1986 he has been living in Paris and focusing on France in the books and articles he has written and some of the documentaries he and his wife Joanne Burke have been making, including their work in progress, Paris Noir: African Americans in the City of Light, about writers, artists, jazz musicians, and Josephine Baker in France in the period from 1918 to 1940.David and Joanne have been involved in numerous film projects. TO GET A FEELING FOR THE WONDERFUL ERA, YOU MUST WATCH JOANNE AND DAVID BURKE'S 7-MINUTE YouTube VIDEO, inspired by Woody Allen's MIDNIGHT IN PARIS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miH9U0FiesY. LET'S SWING. CABARET SINGER CLAUDIA HOMMEL. "BY THE RIVERBANK: THE JAZZ FAURE THEATRE PROJECT."
Sunday 25 September 2011
20h00 - 23h00ish
Happy Hour. Claudia's Presentation And Songs. Reynold Philisek's Guitar Cameo. Dinner And Dessert. More Great Socializing.
Our Guests of Honor
Claudia Hommel Actor - Singer
Reynold Philisek Guitarist (A cameo)
Actor-singer Claudia Hommel is a favorite wherever she performs -- from the Frick Museum in Pittsburgh, the Metropolis Performing Arts Center in Illinois, the Musée de Montmartre, and Paris Soirees. A few years ago, Claudia brought us the Jazz Fauré Project ensemble as they made their Paris début at La Halle St. Pierre. In prior visits she has improvised with Dennis Shafer and regaled us with French chansons. Her entourage this year will include fans and fellow travelers from the US, especially Chicago.
French impressionism meets American jazz: songs of 19th century French composer Gabriel Fauré are arranged for 21st century jazz combo and vocals, and why not? The music is full of color and light and fleeting spontaneous gestures. Romance, cynicism, ardour and dreams.
"By the Riverbank" premiered in September in Chicago. "By the Riverbank, the classic love songs of Gabriel Fauré are now swinging in English for the first time. The lineup of fabulous singers—KT McCammond, John Eskola, Amanda Hartley, Sean Harris, Sean Effinger-Dean, Jeny Wasilewski, and Claudia Hommel..."

Sunday 18 September 2011
19h15 - 23h00ish Happy Hour. Aslam and Subash's Presentations. Subash's Songs. Dinner and Dessert. More Great
Socializing. Our Guests of Honor:
Aslam Ansari Filmmaker
Subash David Graphic Artist, Singer/Composer Advertising CEO
"Two Multicultural Celebrities From India And Pakistan" SUBASH DAVID Subash David, graphic artist, singer, composer is the owner of the Paris advertising agency "INCREA", twice awarded best advertising agency for cover design. Subash is originally from India. Subash is a longtime friend of filmmaker Aslam Ansari, who is originally from Pakistan. So from a cultural and creative prism, they make a friendship flag and a fine blend of India & Pakistan's culture - in this age of conflicts and confusion. ASLAM ANSARI
From Aslam - on film:
I have chosen film as a medium to express complex ideas. Ideas are more important to me, and film is a medium. Aslam Ansari's new film project in development is titled "What's Wrong My Dear Brother?", a satire with an "avant-garde action"...
It's protagonist's motto: "No guns, no revolver, just poetry and music - that's my tool box".
He is tracking down some well-placed high-calibre persons who are engaged in international corruption for enormous amounts estimated to be many billion dollars each year.
The film's opening line: "In a world where everyone is chasing money, he is chasing the money-chasers."
Subash and Aslam will share their insights into cross fertilization among eastern and western cultures particularly in the arts, cinema and creative business.
Despite the conflictual geopolitics in the area that grab the news, hear about the fascinating things ( in the arts and business scene) coming out of the increasingly dynamic Subcontinent from the real people that make them happen.
Subash will sing some of his own compositions. It'll be fun and we'll learn a lot. - Patricia Address: (This month's gourmet venue.) A COOL, exotic venue with great food in the heart of the Latin Quarter!

MORE BOSSA NOVA. HOMAGE TO ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM (TOM JOBIM) A FATHER OF BOSSA NOVA AND MODERN BRASILIAN MUSIC
Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim (Tom Jobim)
Guitarist and vocalist YVES LE Goff will interpret the songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim, a founder of BOSSA NOVA who launched such international stars as Astrud Gilberto.
Yves, who plays guitar and sings, dedicates his musical life to Jobim. It’s a passion that just happened. He can’t explain it. He says that some musicians dedicate themselves to Bach or Mozart and he dedicates himself to Jobim.
When I first spoke with Yves about Tom Jobim, I confessed that I didn’t know anything about him. Then I Googled and I found the story of an amazingly talented songwriter and vocalist who wrote songs for “Orfeo Negro” (“Black Orpheus”- including “Someone To Light Up My Life”), collaborated with Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto on one of the best selling jazz albums of all time, “Getz/Gilberto” and who wrote songs that launched the Bossa Nova movement/style: “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Corcovado”. These songs made Astrud Gilberto an international sensation and “The Girl from Ipanema” was record of the year in 1964. They have endured. (Grammy awards). We all still sing them.
I looked at photos which show a strikingly handsome young man and a gorgeously cute older man whom you can't help but adore.
Jobim's musical roots were planted firmly in the work of Pixinguinha, the legendary musician and composer who began modern Brazilian music in the 1930s. Among his teachers were Lúcia Branco, and, from 1941 on, Hans-Joachim Koellreutter. Jobim was also influenced by the French composers Claude Debussy and Ravel, and by Jazz. Among many themes, his lyrics talked about love, self discovery, betrayal, joy and especially about the birds and natural wonders of Brazil, like the "Mata Atlântica" forest, characters of Brazilian folklore like Matita Pereira (Saci Pererê), and his home city of Rio de Janeiro (His childhood neighborhood was Ipanema). His family, of French origin, emigrated to Brazil in the17th century.
