SUNDAY 5 JULY 2015

"THE STRASBOURG THAT I LOVE "

Special Guest is Peter Schlipf, German-American Photographer and Photo journalist based in Germany.

From Peter:

"What orginally attracted me to Strasbourg was the duality of the culture there; a perfect mix of French and German (Don't tell the Alsacians that). Many Alsatians speak French and German and often also English.

Modern Strasbourg is the perfect example of a French/German friendship that nobody thought was possible 70 years ago.

The Jardin des Deux Rive, which opened in 2009 is the crowning jewel: a park on both sides of the borders on the Rhine connected by a pedestrian bridge that you can cross day or night with no checkpoints.
(There was a time where you could have been shot just for thinking that.)

And as of 2016, the Strasbourg City Tram will  be crossing over the Rhine to Kehl, Germany, bringing both sides even closer together.

There's a lot happening on the water as well.

Strasbourg is the capitol of Europe with the highest concentration of consulates in France outside of Paris. This creates an ever present multi-cultural flavor and cultural diversity.

Historically, what I will also be featuring is the Place de la Republique area, also known as the "German Quarter".

When Germany beat France in 1871 and took over Alsace, Kaiser Wilhelm II re-built the area with what was then "modern" German architechture, which today offers
 a unique, traditional French/German flare

So there are a lot of reasons to jump on the TGV and head east to Strasbourg anytime of the year - and not only just for the Christmas markets."

SUNDAY 28 JUNE 2015

19h15 - 22h30

"FRANK SINATRA AND THE RAT PACK IN LAS VEGAS "

Special Guest is Ed Walters, former Sands Hotel Casino Boss in Las Vegas and protegé of Frank Sinatra. This is Ed's 6th Talk. He always has fascinating new stories about these legendary performers.

He doesn't make them up. He recounts his experiences as a very young man, when he worked with Frank Sinatra and his entourage, friends and associates in Las Vegas.
Ed was quoted the February issue of Vanity Fair about his relationship with Frank Sinatra.

I find it fun and almost pleasantly hypnotic to hear insider stories about personalities that I've always admired and been fascinated by:

Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, JFK, Robert Kennedy, to name a few. Ed has just the little story to endear and bring to life these icons. You feel as though you were there in the room with them: a description, a word, a gesture.

And of course, there's The Rat Pack itself: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford.

Always new and fascinating stories about larger than life people from a special era.

Fun! Nostalgia. - Patricia

Address: At a fun and trendy apartment in the center of Paris. We'll confirm the exact address details with the reservation!

It's €25.00 (EXACT CHANGE) for a fun dinner. Free-flowing wine.

SUNDAY 24 MAY 2015

PARIS IN THE JAZZ AGE. THE 1920s SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF AUTHOR LANGSTON HUGHES.

Special Guest is David Burke, Writer, who will speak and introduce a short video clip of filmmaker Joanne Burke, "Jazz Comes To Paris".

Writer Langston Hughes came to Paris, and captured impressions of what he saw in the autobiography of his young years, The Big Sea. As a young expat, he worked as a busboy in the famous Monmartre night club, Le Grand Duc, owned by African American Expat Eugene Bullard, former WWI fighter pilot in the French Air Corp.

At Le Grand Duc, Langston Hughes saw many celebrities of the day, often larger than life figures. Among them were the icon, Josephine Baker, nightclub owner, singer and hostess Bricktop, jazz saxophonist Sidney Bechet, singers Mabel Mercer and Alberta Hunter and singer and stage star Adelaide Hall.

David Burke will present their stories and the stories of others, during an era when Monmartre was considered to be the Harlem of Paris, known for "le hot jazz".

To give us a real feeling for the era, David will introduce a short  8 minute clip  “JAZZ COMES TO PARIS” from director Joanne Burke’s DVD collection: “When African Americans Came to Paris.”

This lively clip contains music of the period. Later in life, Langston Hughes became known as the poet laureate of Harlem, and one of his poems “Jazz Band in a Parisian Cabaret” is recited in the clip.

Now, you have followers, fans, and subscribers across multiple platforms; this makes the task of building a personal brand more important than ever in today's fast-changing world.

Your brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room; it's how they feel when they hear your name.

It's essentially how your friends, clients, and colleagues perceive you. And face it, perception is reality.

Whether you want to change careers, attract new clients, or start a new business, a strong and clear personal brand is absolutely essential.

This presentation will help you define your value and purpose (your brand) and how to communicate that value to others (your marketing).”

Beco Lichtman, a brand management consultant, speaker, and founder of Homegrown Brand Strategy, created the company on the belief that enduring brands create emotional connections with their target audiences in order to succeed.

About “Love Letters” (Scenes)

Love Letters is a play by A. R. Gurney that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play centers on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III. Using the epistolary form sometimes found in novels, they sit side by side at tables and read the notes, letters and cards – in which over nearly 50 years, they discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats – that have passed between them throughout their separated lives. While Andrew becomes a U.S. senator, Melissa fails as an artist. In the end Melissa kills herself.[1]
