London Based Scholar And Comedian Visiting Paris

Raoul Malhotra is a young British Asian (India) currently in Paris in his gap year. Next year he will attend LSE (The London School of Economics), but is currently completing course work for his Ph D in life. Over the last year or so, Raoul has taken a capricious approach to Bollywood in an effort to improve his Hindi. Looking at Bollywood from all angles, he will be discussing his own attitudes to Indian cinema, and its marketability all over the world. Frequently asked questions such as "Do all these movies really need to be 4 hours long?" and "Why do they sing and dance at the most inappropriate times?", will be looked at as Raoul attempts to deconstruct the myths and legends of Bollywood.

Background on Bollywood

*Bollywood (Hindi: बॉलीवुड) is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, India. The term is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; it is only a part of the Indian film industry.[1] Bollywood is the largest film producer in India and one of the largest centers of film production in the world.[2][3][4] The name is a portmanteau of Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, the center of the American film industry. Bollywood is more properly refered to as Hindi cinema, though frequent use of poetic Urdu words is fairly common. There has been a growing presence of Indian English un dialogue and songs as well. It is not uncommon to see films that feature dialogue with English words and phrases, or even whole sentences.[6]The name "Bollywood" is a portmanteau of Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, the center of the American film industry. Kathleen Spivack is the author of six books: prose and poetry ( Doubleday; Graywolf, etc.) and has won numerous prizes and recognition for her literary work. Her work appears in the The New Yorker; Atlantic Monthly; The Paris Review and so forth --
as well as in scads of little mags you've never heard of!

Kathleen teaches in the US; in Paris; in the French University system, where she has worked since 1990. Her travel essays appear regularly in the Best Travel Writing series; and Best Travel Writing by Women. This year she won two Solas Awards for her travel writing; as well as an International Grand Prix for Best Travel Essay 2009.(Destination: The best story about a place that captures its essence and reveals its attractions, making the reader want to go there.) "DIAL M for MERDE And About the "MERDE" Series

(Paraphrased from his biographical notes)

Originally from Bournemouth, England, Stephen Clarke played bass in some of the worst rock bands in musical history before leaving town to study French and German at Oxford.
After university, he got a series of high-powered jobs in the wine industry (grape picking), tertiary sector (washing up in a German hotel), and in international diplomacy (teaching English to bored French businessmen).

Stephen Clarke became a fiction writer and is the inventor of the "Merde"series (expat Paul West's) humorous insights about living in France. He sold the first copies of "A Year In the Merde". from a shopping trolley, then to bookshops and publishers. There was a sequel, "Merde Actually", there was a sequel to the sequel, "Merde Happens", and finally the sequel to the sequel to the sequel , "Dial M for Merde." (Another expat Paul West adventure and a spoof on "Dial M for Murder").

Stephen remains a bass player for really bad rock bands.

FREYjA is an Australian singer/songwriter who currently lives in Paris. She came to record six songs four years ago and simply never left.

Her first two albums won Music Oz awards for best Jazz Song and Best Performer. She has also performed for many Festivals in Europe and Australia. FREYjA is also an actress who has performed throughout Australia and was also a radio show host for several years there, while also running a Jazz Booking agency, Jazzabella Music.

FREYjA will showcase her 3rd album “This Girl”, a current sell out, with a live band on stage on Friday 30 Nov at 17h00 (5.00 pm) at FNAC Forum Les Halles, 1 - 7 rue Pierre Lescot. Metro Les Halles, Rayon Disques - Showcase Jazz.
