"Punking Out In Paris. (Or Why I Left American When Trump Was Elected)."

Our Special Guests are

AUDREY EDWARDS
Writer, Author, Editor (Former Editor And Executive Editor Of Essence Magazine, Et. Al.), New Paris Expat

TOMMIE-LEE MCKENZIE
Bassist

SAYS AUDREY EDWARDS:
"I'd like to discuss why for me leaving America was imperative after Trump became President.
Some people thought I was" punking out" by leaving. Some thought I was showing courage. The point is, making the decision to leave one's native land is never easy and is always transformative.

But I knew that the America I was born into would no longer feel safe under Trump because his political leadership would be hostile at worst (or indifferent at best) to my aspirations as a black and a woman: as a mother of a black son and a grandmother to four black girls, as a journalist who has always reported from the blurred lines of race and gender."

ABOUT AUDREY EDWARDS:
Audrey Edwards, a contributing writer for Essence magazine and former contributing editor at More magazine, was a magazine editor for more than two decades, having held the positions of Editor and Executive Editor at Essence; Vice President and Executive Editor at Black Enterprise magazine; and a Senior Editor at More and Family Circle magazines.

Her media career also includes extensive freelance magazine writing, with her work having been published in O, The Oprah Magazine; the New York Times Sunday Magazine; Vibe; the Columbia Journalism Review, among others; and the online publications The Huffington Post, The Root.com and Salon.com.

Her most recent work is the book collaboration she did with Edward Lewis, co-founder and publisher of Essence magazine, titled The Man From Essence: Creating a Magazine for Black Women, published by Atria Books (Simon & Schuster) in 2014. In addition, she is the co-author of Children of the Dream: The Psychology of Black Success , published by Doubleday.

In addition to authoring books and magazine features, Audrey has taught magazine writing and magazine editing at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University and New York University’s Publishing Institute.

For the past three decades Audrey Edwards has divided her freelance journalism career with being a real estate broker. She ran her own company, Plaza Properties, in Brooklyn, New York, for 22 years before joining the real estate firm Brown Harris Stevens in 2008 as an Associate Broker.

She is a member of the Real Estate Board of New York.

"NAPOLEON AND JOSEPHINE: A LOVE STORY. A DESTINY"

Josephine was a Reign of Terror widow who was “connected” to many of the influential policy makers of the French government
(most notably Paul Barras).

Napoleon may have initially began an affair with Josephine to take advantage of her connections.

Love letters sent from the both however tell a different reason for their affair.

Napoleon and Josephine married on March 9 1796...two days later, Napoleon left to lead the Army of Italy.

Affairs on both sides will cool passions and Josephine’s inability to give Napoleon a child, and the need for a political alliance with Austria,
will prompt his divorce from Josephine in 1810.

Edith real give us many insights into their legendary, unique and enduring relationship.

Strategies For Positive Energy During Stressful Times.

You may remember that Susan  lectured on teaching mindfulness to clients suffering from depression. She still  periodically makes presentations to the (US) military on this topic.

What can we do when everything seems so uncertain, when there is anxiety and/or fear?

Says Susan:  “We will smile, laugh a bit and take some steps to connect with our own emotions which we often forget in the midst of doing nice things for our family and our friends. We will smile, breathe, laugh and exchange thoughts on what works.

Right now: stand tall and feel rooted to the core of the earth.  Breathe.“

Susan’s talk on this fascinating subject, will include a breathing exercise, “game” and a very, short meditation.

***

Susan T. Lindau, LCSW is both a clinician with a private practice in Los Angeles and an Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern California in the School of Social Work.  She got her MSW at the University of Michigan.  A book with a chapter on mindfulness by Susan was released this year.  She also has a novel available through Amazon and is currently completing a book on living in today’s culture of trauma.

A New Look At Jean-Paul Sartre And Simone de Beauvoir:

Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir are the Bonny and Clyde of Philosophy.
They are both iconic Parisians who used to hang out in the mythical Café de Flore in Saint-Germain des Prés.

Jean-Paul Sartre invented Existentialism and Simone de Beauvoir was one of the inventors of modern feminism.
But behind the legends, were two human beings whose secrets and complexities were discovered after their deaths.

During their a 50 year union, they each had many affairs and laisons, which they recounted to each other daily, in detail, in cafés. Some see their relationships as liberated. Others see them as depraved. How did they each feel about these relationships? How did these relationships influence their work and legacies?

When such brilliant people fall in love, it makes for a fascinating love story.

Paris As The Answer:

Lisa Anselmo wrapped her entire life around her mother, a strong woman who was a defining force in Lisa’s life―maybe too defining.

When her mother dies from breast cancer, Lisa realizes she hadn’t built a life of her own and struggles to find her purpose.

Who is she without her mother―and her mother’s expectations?

Desperate for answers, she turns to her favorite city―Paris―and impulsively buys a small apartment, refusing to play it safe for the first time.

What starts out as an act of survival sets Lisa on a course that reshapes her life in ways she never could have imagined. Suddenly, she’s living like a local in a city she thought she knew, but her high school French, while fine for buying bread at the corner boulangerie, goes only so far when Paris gives her a strong dose of real life.

From dating to homeownership in a foreign country, Lisa quickly learns it’s not all picnics on the Seine, and starts to doubt herself―and her love of the city.

But she came to Paris to be happy, and she can’t give up now. Isn’t happiness worth fighting for?

In the vein of Eat, Pray, Love and Wild, My (Part-Time) Paris Life a story is for anyone who’s ever felt lost or hopeless, but still dreams of something more.

This candid memoir explores one woman’s search for peace and meaning, and how the ups and downs of expat life in Paris taught her to let go of fear, find self-worth, and create real, lasting happiness in the City of Light
