"THIS LUSCIOUS LIFE"

Our Special Guest Is Kelley Black

Acclaimed Author

Executive Life Coach, Speaker, NAAM Yoga Teacher.

Says Kelley Black:

This book is about living a luscious life. It's my heartfelt wish for every reader to live one. And since there is no recipe for simply knowing, no how-to-method for claiming personal power, no power-through technique for being receptive . . .

I decided to write from my life experience.

This life has cracked me open through joy and suffering. I can honestly say that it's been an odyssey of experiences both exhilarating in their happiness and excruciating in their pain.

Somehow, its deep polarities have arrived in equal measure.
I've been sparked by a profound awe for something unseen, something more than the external coincidence of my time alive.
I know that for every bit of pain, I've also experienced the ecstasy of pleasure and pure joy.

I also know that all of it, somehow,
has worked in my favor to move me to a deeper connection
and expression of my true self. My wish in writing this book is to give as I've received.

Gratitude. Forgiveness. Love. These are our birthright.
This book is my attempt at giving back to the divine source in a world that has held me up even as I've fallen.
It is my love letter to life.

David Evans

American Blues Star, Scholar And Author
"American Doctor of the Blues": Music. Experiences.

David Evans has been a performer (blues vocal and guitar) since the 1960s. He has played at concerts and festivals throughout the United States and toured over fifty times as a solo performer and/or accompanist in twenty-two countries of Europe, South America, and Africa.

David has performed and/or recorded with Alan Wilson (later of Canned Heat), Van Zula Hunt, Hammie Nixon,
Jessie Mae Hemphill, Johnny Shines, and Robert Belfour.

In Memphis and the Mid-South he performs with the Last Chance Jug Band and recorded a CD, Shake That Thing, with them in 1997. He also recorded the solo CDs Match Box Blues in 2002, Needy Time in 2007, Live at “Alte Post” in 2012, and Under the Yam Yam Tree in 2013.

Most of his style and repertoire were learned from artists with whom he has been associated through fieldwork and touring.

Evans has produced over fifty LP’s and CD’s of field and studio recordings and has written liner and booklet notes for over eighty others.

In 2003 he received a Grammy Award for “Best Album Notes.” He is also the editor for the “American Made Music” series of books for the University Press of Mississippi and the “Deep River of Song” series of CD’s for Rounder Records of field recordings of African American folk music by John and Alan Lomax.

Evans has lectured throughout the United States and in thirteen foreign countries. He has been a consultant for a number of museums, exhibits, programs, festivals, radio, television, film, and video productions.

David Evans is the author of Tommy Johnson (London: Studio Vista, 1971), a study of the life and music of a folk blues singer,
and Big Road Blues: Tradition and Creativity in the Folk Blues (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1982; paperback reprint, 1987), both based upon his fieldwork.

More recently, he has authored (with John Minton) “The Coon in the Box”: A Global Folktale in African-American Tradition (Helsinki: Academia Scientiarum Fennica, 2001) and The NPR Curious Listener’s Guide to Blues (New York: Perigee, 2005), and edited Ramblin’ on My Mind: New Perspectives on the Blues (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2008).

Evans has also written many journal articles and book chapters on various aspects of blues, African American folk music, and musical instruments, including major biographical studies of Bukka White, Charley Patton, and Blind Willie McTell. He has also contributed many entries to encyclopedias, dictionaries, and handbooks, including

The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
, Encyclopedia of Southern Culture, International Dictionary of Black Composers, Encyclopedia of American Folklore, Handbook of American Folklore, The Blackwell Guide to Blues Records, American National Biography, Black Women in America, The Blues: A Bibliographical Guide, Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, American Musical Traditions, The Cambridge Companion to Blues and Gospel Music, Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World, and Encyclopedia of African American Folklore.

As a student of Classical languages at Harvard University (1961-65), Evans became interested in American folk music by listening to recordings and hearing traditional performers at coffee houses and concerts. He soon began learning guitar and performing in coffee houses. His interest in folk music gravitated toward blues and African American folk music, and he began interviewing folk blues performers who came through Cambridge on tours.

After graduation from Harvard, Evans enrolled in the Folklore and Mythology graduate program at the University of California, Los Angeles, receiving the M.A. degree in 1967 and the Ph.D. in 1976. Beginning in 1965, he did fieldwork in southern states for periods of several weeks at a time over the next dozen years, collecting hundreds of hours of recordings and interviews that have resulted in many publications and record albums of blues and other types of African American folk music.
He has also compiled over the years a record collection of 78’s, 45’s, LP’s, and CD’s of folk, popular, and ethnic music that comprises over thirty thousand items.

Evans began teaching in the Anthropology Department at California State University, Fullerton, in 1969. In 1978 he joined the faculty at Memphis State University (now The University of Memphis) and has since then been Professor of Music there.   He received a First Tennessee professorship for 2006-2009 and the Willard R. Sparks Eminent Faculty Award in 2007.  In 2011 he was a Fulbright Senior Specialist at Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia.

David Evans will have books and recordings available for purchase.

SUNDAY 18 SEPTEMBER 2016

"FRANK SINATRA AND THE RAT PACK IN LAS VEGAS "

Our Special Guest is Ed Walters, former Sands Hotel Casino Boss in Las Vegas and protégé of Frank Sinatra.

ED WALTERS

This is Ed's 7th talk for us. He always has fascinating new stories about these legendary performers.

He doesn't make them up. He recounts his experiences as a very young man, when he worked with Frank Sinatra and his entourage, friends and associates in Las Vegas.
Ed was quoted the February 2015 issue of Vanity Fair about his relationship with Frank Sinatra.

I find it fun and almost pleasantly hypnotic to hear insider stories about personalities that I've always admired and been fascinated by:

Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, JFK, Robert Kennedy, to name a few. Ed has just the little story to endear and bring to life these icons. You feel as though you were there in the same room with them:
a description, a word,  the memory of a gesture.

And of course, there's The Rat Pack itself: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford.

Always new and fascinating stories about larger than life people from a special era, the 1960s.

Fun! Nostalgia.

 TOM MCKENZIE

Tom McKenzie and his Bass will also render homage to Frank Sinatra.

Address: At a trendy and fun new venue - a French bistro in the Marais -  just behind BHV. at the metro Hotel de Ville (ligne 1). GREAT FRENCH FOOD. We'll confirm the exact address details with the reservation!

Says Tom about his instrument:

"La Contrebasse.  La Grand-mère.  String bass.  Bass fiddle.  Double bass.  Bull bass.  Bass viol.

She is called by many names and her function in any musical ensemble is to, "basically", lay down the groove:
provide the bottom (base) of the harmony and rhythm.

But, her melodic range is broad, and she can sing you to tears as well as make you feel that thump in your rump."

churches, theatres, concerts, festivals, recording studios. He has also been a street musician.

"
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN WEST HARLEM: On Creating 3 Community And Art Galleries There."

How Art Can Strenghten And Solidify A Community

Special Guest Is:

  Ana-Ofelia Rodriguez
CUNY Dominican Studies Institute
Broadway Housing Committees

Says Ana::

"There are three groups I work with—there is a group of artists from the generation of the 1980s who I work closely with. My role is to open up new doors for them to exhibit their art and become part of the New York art scene. That's one thing I have been working on for past 16 years. I have found that the challenges I thought I would find with artists are not really there.

People want to create work but need a place to show it. I was able to convince my employer to open up public spaces so art could flourish in our buildings. I was able to do so because I knew a lot of Dominican artists. So they have been my pillar.

It has been a learning curve in both directions: they learn with me there are places they can go to and really focus on art, meet artists, meet venues. As I meet artists, the door doesn't only open for me but for them. Most of the artists believe I'm providing a service to them but actually they have enriched my life.

For some of them, I have seen a growth in the last ten years that even they themselves wonder how they got where they are today, knowing people from other communities and being invited to showcase their art.

The other group is Dominican families and children. My focus is education—helping parents navigate through the educational system."

The third component of Rodriguez's work: "creating a very inviting space where people from different educational backgrounds can come together and have an earnest conversation about the state of their community. About what's happening in the community. The space has to be inviting and safe. That comes about in the spaces we call community galleries. :” ...for art and conversation.

She is called by many names and her function in any musical ensemble is to, "basically", lay down the groove: provide the bottom (base) of the harmony and rhythm.

But, her melodic range is broad, and she can sing you to tears as well as make you feel that thump in your rump."

Special Guests Are:

Shannon Cain of
"His Place In Provence"

Tom M Kenzie
Bassist

SHANNON CAIN

Of

"His Place In Provence,"
whose mission is to protect, acquire and renovate James Baldwin's former home in Provence and to convert it to a residence for artists and writers.

A Conversation about L'Ancienne Maison Baldwin,

Internationally acclaimed writer and cultural icon James Baldwin found a second home in France, and he was granted the country’s highest order of merit,
the Legion d’Honneur, in 1986.

And yet today, Baldwin’s sole geographic legacy, the house in St. Paul-de-Vence where he lived for seventeen years until his death, is under threat. The land speculation company that owns the house and its ten surrounding acres has plans to install eighteen luxury condos on the property...

James Baldwin’s unflinching analysis of tormented dynamics that continue to plague Western societies, combined with his manifold literary gifts, have made him an increasingly inspirational figure both in the United States and throughout the English-speaking world.

And he deserves far greater stature in France, both as one of the archetypal American expats—in the same pantheon as Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Stein—and as a distinctly Black writer whose words speak with more currency than ever to the ongoing struggle for equality in our increasingly fractured societies..

The time is ripe for a Franco-American collaboration that would preserve his longtime home, much of which remains salvageable. This estate is the most logical site for a center devoted to promoting the art and ideas that unite us all—a residence for writers, a gathering venue for thinkers and activists, and a place to pay homage and reflect on the achievement that was James Baldwin’s remarkable life.

Far away from the cold, I run away .... to Paris
