"Dining Out in Paris – What You Need to Know before You Get to the City of Light"

Special Guest is Tom Reeves, Longtime Paris Expatriate. Tom Reeves is the author of two books about Paris :  Paris Insights – An Anthology and  Dining Out in Paris - What You Need to Know before You Get to the City of Lighand co-founder and president of Discover Paris.

Tom wrote Dining Out In Paris...so that travelers would not make the same mistakes he once made when visiting Paris.

From Tom:

"The overall mistake was assuming that French people have the same habits as Americans when it comes to eating out!

I wrote Dining Out in Paris to convey how dining culture France is different from dining culture in the United States.  I want to encourage American travelers to be open to a different dining experience than what they know at home.  For example, the fact that a waiter does not return to your table time and time again to ask if everything is O.K. does not mean that French waiters are indifferent to you.  It means that they are leaving you alone to enjoy the meal.

As a bonus, Dining Out in Paris contains reviews of twelve restaurants at which I greatly enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, and the service.  I thought that American travelers would appreciate knowing the names of a few good medium-priced restaurants that are off the tourist track where they could enjoy a fine meal."

Dining Out in Paris attained best-seller status in four Amazon.com categories –

#1 on Kindle Store in Travel Food & Lodging Dining, #1 in Dining Travel Reference,

#2 in Travel Europe France, and #3 in Travel Food, Lodging & Transportation Dining.

Let’s get acquainted with ...the legendary Ninon de Lenclos, who was the sexiest wowan of the 17th century.Men were seduced by her until she was 70.

A legendary beauty, Madame de Montespan, bewitched the Sun King, Louis the 14th, and was his mistress for 12 years. Then in an incredible coup, the virtuous, non sexy, nor beautiful, Madame de Maintenon won the Sun King’s heart and became his wife in 1683.

What did these women have in common?  What was the secret of their seductive powers?

Let’s also meet men: Let’s learn about the seductive powers of the Duke de Lauzun, unattractive and un remarkable, who lived before Casanova, seduced and married La Grande Mademoiselle, cousin of the Sun King, and who was the most powerful woman of the 17th century.

PARIS: THE "LOST GENERATION". REMEMBERING CLASSIC PARIS EXPATS FROM THE 1920s. RELIVING THAT ALWAYS FASCINATING MOMENT IN PARIS HISTORY.

"Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald In Paris: A Turbulent Friendship.

Special Guest is David Burke:Writer, Filmmaker, And Literary Tour Guide.

FROM DAVID BURKE:

"After the publication of The Great Gatsby in the spring of 1925 the peak of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s work as a novelist – he and his wife Zelda came to Paris. Within days he tracked down Ernest Hemingway in Montmartre, and a complicated relationship developed.

Fitzgerald, then 28, was the most famous young fiction writer in America,
while Hemingway, three years his junior, was a novice with only a small number of stories having been published by two presses in Paris. But Scott had read and admired them and he wanted young Hem to connect with his own publisher, Scribner’s, the tops in the US for fiction. Despite their drastically different personalities and styles of life they became friends and literary mates. In the following year, 1926, Scott put a huge effortinto helping Hem with his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, by offering important suggestions for changes in the manuscript which Hem accepted – and conniving with Hem in a nasty ploy of Hem’s to get the book away from a publisher in New York to which Hem was now under contract and get it over to Scott’s brilliant Maxwell Perkins at Scribner’s. Which worked.

So why did Hemingway see fit to trash the image of his longdead friend Scott in A Moveable Feast, Hem’s late1950s memoir of his “very poor and very happy” early years in Paris?

The twists and turns of this question we will explore at Paris Soirées."

ABOUT DAVID BURKE:

David Burke is a writer, filmmaker, and literary tour guide based in Paris since 1986. A
Connecticut native, he studied at the Taft School and Yale and after military service went to New York to work in documentary films. There he worked on programs for PBS, ABC, NBC, and mainly CBS News, writing and producing for Walter Cronkite, Charles Kuralt,Dan Rather and Ed Bradley on 60 MINUTES.

In 1986 he and his filmmaker wife Joanne Burke took a yearlong sabbatical in Paris, and stayed on. David wrote magazine articles, travel pieces for HarperCollins, two editions of their ACCESS PARIS guide, MEDITERRANEAN FRANCE for Globe Pequot Press, and WRITERS IN PARIS, a labor of love, published by Counterpoint Press, Berkeley, in 2008. It launched David’s popular series of literary walks, WRITERS IN PARIS WALKING TOURS.

(Ernest Hemingway, a giant of 20th century American literature (a Nobel Prize winner), learned much of his skill here in Paris mingling with the Personalities of the day such as Gertrude Stein, James Joyce and Ezra Pound. Many of his books and short stories are rich in Paris references, most notably “The Sun Also Rises” and “A Moveable Feast”. He was the quintessential American expatriate of the 1920s.)

(F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American novelkst and short story writer, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of theJazz Age. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation." (Paris) of the 1920s.)

Within days he tracked down Ernest Hemingway in Montmartre, and a complicated relationship developed." David will share details of that fascinating story with us.
