"Daniel Alexander Payne"
From Nelson: "Daniel Alexander Payne (1811-1893) was a teacher, poet, ecumenist, university president and bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.* After the Civil War he traveled to Europe. Of particular importance are his encounters, studies, and visits to sites in Paris. This presentation examines the Paris experience of this nineteenth century African American. Payne’s experience in the City of Light gives us a glimpse of the past and contributes to understanding the present attraction of Paris by ex-patriots as well as tourists."
Author Nelson T. Strobert is professor of Christian education. He is also director of multicultural studies at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettsburg Pensylvania.
Looking back at the 19th Century. A privileged peep at Paris History.
*(Payne became the first African-American president of a college in the United States)
