"PARIS IN THE JAZZ AGE (1920s): THE LEGENDARY JOSEPHINE BAKER."

Special Guest is Filmmaker and Writer David Burke.

JOSEPHINE BAKER: A MOST EXTRAORDINARY LIFE. The 'Black Venus' made much of her opportunities. She headlined major music halls, starred in movies, produced records and Josephine-related products, to tremendous financial success and all controlled by her. During WWII, she also played an important role in the Free French Résistance movement and became a decorated war hero.

Background of the era:

If not for Paris and the French, jazz might have disappeared after World War II.” That is the belief of international jazz critic Patricia Myers, a former speaker at Paris Soirees.

Says Patricia Myers: "Jazz was loved by the French in the 1920s, when Josephine Baker first brought her “danse primitive” to Paris.

New Orleans saxophonist Sidney Bechet came next, followed in the 1930s by pianist Bud Powell and saxophonists Johnny “The Little Giant” Griffin, Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins.

In Paris, they found escape from punitive Jim Crow laws in the United States. Here they were accepted, without regard to their color, for their musicianship. Jazz was revered in Europe as a symbol and expression of freedom."

We'll show Joanne Burke's dvd about Josephine Baker: Best Film/Video award from the 30th annual Black International Cinema festival in Berlin as director of her documentary series When African Americans Came to Paris, Part I & II (The Stars). The award category for which she won is "Video on Matters Relating to the Black Experience/Marginalized People."

THE GENDER REVOLUTION: NATURE vs NURTURE

Special Guest is Connie-Lee Bennett, Holistic Psychotherapist

I have been fascinated by the highly publicized gender transition of Bruce Jenner. The widespread publicity and the many interviews captured my attention and made me focus on the long psychological and physically painful progress. I was shaken when I read the details fo what's involved in feminization surgery.

I constantly thought: What can motivate a person to endure such physical agony? What is this all about? What is the motivation for wanting to make such a drastic transition?

Connie-Lee Bennett is one of the leading pioneers to bring Holistic Psychotherapy to the awareness of modern society through Meraki Therapy. In her practice she helps people find the tools within themselves to create a life they love. Connie-Lee has been involved in the world of psychology in both the academic and cathartic disciplines for over 15 years, is currently writing her first book and is a Holistic Psychotherapist, certified Heal Your Life® workshop leader, public speaker and teacher. Please visit www.merakitherapy.com

Connie-Lee will help enlighten us and answer questions. Cant' wait.

Says Patricia: " I've lived in 5 different countries and traveled in 20. I began while in college at Sarah Lawrence at age 19. I've been rooted in Paris for more than 20 years and am a French citizen. I'm always looking forward to meeting interesting, new people from everywhere. That's my passion."

There's Always

“A BLAST OF CREATIVE ENERGY!"

When We Get Together.

It's just about the end of summer.
So soon!

Still languishing in the last glorious days of this perfect Parisian summer.
Luckily still mostly sunny. Beginning to rain a little.

The calm is over.
But there are still fewer people around.
Still possible to celebrate the loveliness of Paris, breathe and relax for one more week.

Let's get together and meet fun people.

"50 SHADES OF GREY"

Special Guest Is Dr. Janet Hall: Clinical Psychologist, Hypnotherapist, Author and Professional Speaker in Melbourne, Australia

Storyline

"When Anastasia Steele, a literature student, goes to interview the wealthy Christian Grey as a favor to her roommate Kate Kavanagh, she encounters a beautiful, brilliant and intimidating man.

The innocent and naive Ana starts to realize she wants him. Despite his enigmatic reserve and advice, she finds herself desperate to get close to him.

Not able to resist Ana's beauty and independent spirit, Christian Grey admits he wants her too, but on his own terms.

Ana hesitates as she discovers the singular tastes of Christian Grey - despite the embellishments of success, his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, and his loving family, Grey is consumed by the need to control everything." IMDb

And there is so much more: eroticism, romance, obscession, transcendence, "being in love", BDSM (bondage, dominance, submission, masochism.)

There's Always

“A BLAST OF CREATIVE ENERGY!"

When We Get Together.

Still languishing in the glorious days of this Parisian summer.
Still luckily mostly sunny.

It's calm.
There are fewer people around.
Easy to celebrate the loveliness of Paris, breathe and relax.

Let's get together and meet fun people.

And chill.

THERE'S SOCIAL NETWORKING TOO.

Fascinating People. Brillant conversations.
