COOL BRAZILIAN MUSIC FOR A HOT SUMMER EVENING: "HOMAGE TO ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM (TOM JOBIM) AND BOSSA NOVA"

Photo: Tom Jobim in his apartment in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro

For Expats Of All Origins. French. Visitors (All Ages).

Sunday 14 August 2011 (Rescheduled from last week)

19h00 - 23h00ish

Happy Hour. Yves's Songs. Dinner and Dessert. More Great Socializing.

Our Guest Of Honor

YVES LE GOFF

Singer. Songwriter

MORE BOSSA NOVA. HOMAGE TO ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM (TOM JOBIM) A FATHER OF BOSSA NOVA AND MODERN BRASILIAN MUSIC

Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim (Tom Jobim)

Guitarist and vocalist YVES LE Goff will interpret the songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim, a founder of BOSSA NOVA who launched such international stars as Astrud Gilberto.

Yves, who plays guitar and sings, dedicates his musical life to Jobim. It’s a passion that just happened. He can’t explain it. He says that some musicians dedicate themselves to Bach or Mozart and he dedicates himself to Jobim.

When I first spoke with Yves about Tom Jobim, I confessed that I didn’t know anything about him. Then I Googled and I found the story of an amazingly talented songwriter and vocalist who wrote songs for “Orfeo Negro” (“Black Orpheus”- including “Someone To Light Up My Life”), collaborated with Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto on one of the best selling jazz albums of all time, “Getz/Gilberto” and who wrote songs that launched the Bossa Nova movement/style: “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Corcovado”. These songs made Astrud Gilberto an international sensation and “The Girl from Ipanema” was record of the year in 1964. They have endured. (Grammy awards). We all still sing them.

I looked at photos which show a strikingly handsome young man and a gorgeously cute older man
whom you can't help but adore.

Jobim's musical roots were planted firmly in the work of Pixinguinha, the legendary musician and composer who began modern Brazilian music in the 1930s. Among his teachers were Lúcia Branco, and, from 1941 on, Hans-Joachim Koellreutter. Jobim was also influenced by the French composers Claude Debussy and Ravel, and by Jazz. Among many themes, his lyrics talked about love, self discovery, betrayal, joy and especially about the birds and natural wonders of Brazil, like the "Mata Atlântica" forest, characters of Brazilian folklore like Matita Pereira (Saci Pererê), and his home city of Rio de Janeiro (His childhood neighborhood was Ipanema). His family, of French origin, emigrated to Brazil in the17th century.

There are many sites. I liked www.jobin.com.br

This music is Yves's Passion!

Ed Walters told such great stories last Sunday that we asked him to come back and share more.

Sunday 26 June 2011

Our Guests of Honor:

Ed Walters

Former Casino Boss Of The Sands Hotel In Las Vegas

Dennis Shafer, Musician & Composer: SOUND PAINTING

Frank Sinatra And The Rat Pack In Las Vegas

And Stories Of Other Entertainers In Las Vegas (Including Marilyn Monroe)

*(The Rat Pack: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford)

Former Casino boss Ed Walters originally answered emails about Frank Sinatra on The Frank Sinatra Mailing List (known as the Temple list). These stories were called The Pit Boss Replies, because they were in direct response to questions someone from The Temple List would ask Ed. Many found it fascinating to hear first-hand how Sinatra and his friends really behaved at The Sands. New The Pit Boss Replies stories appear to this day on The Temple List and on The Voice Mailing List (an invitation-only group).

Author Tom Rendour asked Ed if he could share these stories with cyber fans via his Songs By Sinatra website: www.songsbysinatra.com. Ed agreed, and now they are there for everyone to enjoy.
The bulk of these Stories From Vegas are as they appeared originally on The Sinatra Mailing List

Stories you have never heard before that will give you a better understanding of what made Sinatra tick

Please visit: www.songsbysinatra.com

DENNIS SHAEFER, Musician & Composer: SOUND PAINTING Demonstration. Sound painting is the composition of music through the use of gestures

This Sunday, once again, fun and nostalgia.- Patricia

.NOTE: ( The Rat Pack is the nickname given to a group of popular entertainers most active between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s. Its most famous line-up featured Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, who appeared together in films and on stage in the early-1960s.[1] Despite its reputation as a masculine group, the Rat Pack did have female participants, including movie icons Shirley MacLaine, Lauren Bacall, Angie Dickinson, Marilyn Monroe, and Judy Garland. - www.wikipedia.org)

The King's Speech is a 2010 British historical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. Colin Firth plays King George VI who, to overcome his stammer, sees Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist played by Geoffrey Rush. The two men become friends as they work together, and after his brother Edward VIII abdicates, the new king relies on Logue to help him make a radio broadcast on the day that Britain goes to war with Germany at the beginning of World War II.

Seidler, who began researching George VI's life after overcoming his own stammer during his youth, wrote about the men's relationship.

Nine weeks before filming, Logue's notebooks were discovered and quotations from them were incorporated into the script. Principal photography took place in London and other locations in Britain, in December 2009 and early January 2010. The film was released in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2011.

From Charles Stewart: "I'll want to explore how the subject can be interestingly developed. The events of the past week involving Strauss-Kann can be a catalyst for discussing the difference between sexual mores and traditions between NY-CALIF-WASHINGTON and Paris and the way the press treats celebrities and high-profile politicians. (Recall JFK and how he was protected. How different was he from DSK ??) Also, the contrast in French and American reactions. What are we teaching our young? How will the world's leading democracies find leaders if their past and present personal lives risk being subjected to continuous moral scrutiny? Could be very interesting.

My experience as a student for 7 years in Washington D.C., later with Martin Luther King in the Sixties, and later here in Paris and Johannesburg with Mandela (I led his fund raising campaign for his first term presidential election) gave me some interesting insights into the activities of politicians."

Should be both thrilling and intellectually stimulating - Patricia

REDHOT & BLUE

Yale University A Capella Jazz Singers

http://www.redhotandblue.org

Redhot & Blue, usually shortened to Redhot, is Yale University's oldest coeducational a cappella group. Founded in 1977, the group has released eleven albums and toured around the United States and the world. Repertoire for the group is based in the jazz genre, though many of their arrangements stray from this. Redhot is a member of the Singing Group Council of Yale. The group's name is derived from the musical Red, Hot and Blue (1936), written by Yale alumnus Cole Porter, class of 1913. The group name combines Redhot into one word and uses an ampersand, unlike the show. Cole Porter's work is featured often in Redhot's repertoire, from Antoinette Birby, written when he was in college, to more popular songs like "It's De-Lovely", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Night And Day", and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye".

Fun and sophisticated. Also Doggie Eve's Birthday!
