"PARIS IN THE JAZZ AGE (1920s): THE LEGENDARY JOSEPHINE BAKER."
Special Guest is Filmmaker and Writer David Burke.
JOSEPHINE BAKER: A MOST EXTRAORDINARY LIFE. The 'Black Venus' made much of her opportunities. She headlined major music halls, starred in movies, produced records and Josephine-related products, to tremendous financial success and all controlled by her. During WWII, she also played an important role in the Free French Résistance movement and became a decorated war hero.
Background of the era:
“If not for Paris and the French, jazz might have disappeared after World War II.” That is the belief of international jazz critic Patricia Myers, a former speaker at Paris Soirees.
Says Patricia Myers: "Jazz was loved by the French in the 1920s, when Josephine Baker first brought her “danse primitive” to Paris.
New Orleans saxophonist Sidney Bechet came next, followed in the 1930s by pianist Bud Powell and saxophonists Johnny “The Little Giant” Griffin, Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins.
In Paris, they found escape from punitive Jim Crow laws in the United States. Here they were accepted, without regard to their color, for their musicianship. Jazz was revered in Europe as a symbol and expression of freedom."
We'll show Joanne Burke's dvd about Josephine Baker: Best Film/Video award from the 30th annual Black International Cinema festival in Berlin as director of her documentary series When African Americans Came to Paris, Part I & II (The Stars). The award category for which she won is "Video on Matters Relating to the Black Experience/Marginalized People."
