MILES MARSHALL LEWIS

Miles was born in The Bronx, New York, at the beginning of hip hop culture in the early 1970s. He expatriated from the United States to Paris, France during 2004 in response to the Iraq War. His debut essay collection, "Scars of the Soul Are Why Kids Wear Bandages When They Don't Have Bruises" (2004) – a book described as “an observant and urbane B-boy’s rites of passage” – established him as a prose stylist observing American culture in a style directly influenced by Joan Didion, mixing personal reflection with social analysis and humor.

Miles’s second book, "There’s a Riot Goin’ On" (2006), deals with the making of the seminal 1971 album of the same name by Sly and the Family Stone, and the death of the 1960s counterculture. Lewis is the founder and editor of the literary journal Bronx Biannual. He and his French wife Christine Herelle-Lewis live together in France raising their sons, Lucas and Kalel

In 2007, Miles launched Furthermucker.com, where he blogs regularly about the arts, pop culture, hip-hop culture, and his experiences as a black American expatriate in 21st-century Paris.

Our Guest Of Honor

GEORGES VAL

Artist. Diplomat

Georges Val lived in Nigeria for 13 years where, in addition to being an artist, he was a member of the Board of the Nigerian Museum Society. He travelled across the country under the sponsorship of Nigerian Museums. His large dimension paintings, hand lacquered, show the flamboyant African ceremonies and and festivals that he visited.

Nigeria has 150 million inhabitants, and is the most populated country in Africa. (1 African in 5 is Nigerian). In Nigeria, there are 250 different ethnic groups and languages. Within the same culture, there are Animalists, Christians and Moslems. It's a rich cultural mosaic.

Nigerian Museums as well as the British press consider George's work to be unique. His first exhibition in London was featured on the front page of "West Africa", West Africa's largest English language magazine. He has had exhibitions at UNESCO and his work often figures in the press about Nigeria.

Many Afircan-Americans like myself, have roots in Nigeria. I once saw a video of an inauguration ceremony involving the family of a friend, a Nigerian Princess, which I found spellbinding. It will be fascinating to learn more about that culture!

Surprise music!

HOMAGE TO ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM (TOM JOBIM) A FATHER OF BOSSA NOVA AND MODERN BRASILIAN MUSIC

Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim

Guitarist and vocalist YVES LE Goff will interpret the songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim, a founder of BOSSA NOVA who launched such international stars as Astrud Gilberto.

Yves, who plays guitar and sings, dedicates his musical life to Jobim. It’s a passion that just happened. He can’t explain it. He says that some musicians dedicate themselves to Bach or Mozart and he dedicates himself to Jobim.

When I first spoke with Yves about Jobim, I confessed that I didn’t know anything about him. Then I googled and I found the story of an amazingly talented songwriter and vocalist who wrote songs for “Orfeo Negro” (“Black Orpheus”- including “Someone To Light Up My Life”), collaborated with Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto on one of the best selling jazz albums of all time, “Getz/Gilberto” and who wrote songs that launched the Bossa Nova movement/style: “The Girl From Ipanema” and “Corcovado”. These songs made Astrud Gilberto an international sensation and “The Girl from Ipanema” was record of the year in 1964. They endured. (Grammy awards). We all still sing them.

I looked at photos which show a strikingly handsome young man and a gorgeously cute older
whom you can't help but adore.

Jobim's musical roots were planted firmly in the work of Pixinguinha, the legendary musician and composer who began modern Brazilian music in the 1930s. Among his teachers were Lúcia Branco, and, from 1941 on, Hans-Joachim Koellreutter. Jobim was also influenced by the French composers Claude Debussy and Ravel, and by jazz. Among many themes, his lyrics talked about love, self discovery, betrayal, joy and especially about the birds and natural wonders of Brazil, like the "Mata Atlântica" forest, characters of Brazilian folklore like Matita Pereira (Saci Pererê), and his home city of Rio de Janeiro (His childhood neighborhood was Ipanema). His family, of French origin, immigrated to Brazil in the18th century.

There are many sites. I liked www.jobim.com.br
