Our Guest of Honor:
Jim Ounsworth
Venture Capital Consultant And World Traveler
Paris Expat
Jim Ounsworth is an almost full time Paris expat, with intermittent trips back to the US for his ventures. Every year, Jim travels to a distant part of the world for inspiration and challenge, rounding out his life in Paris.
In April 2009, he chose Peru and the Inca trail, not only for the history of the trail but because it posed a physical challenge along with an intellectual one.
Jim will show photos and talk about his hike on the breathtaking Inca trail to the fabled village of Machu Picchu. Jim will talk about the adventure of the hike itself, and also about the history of Machu Picchu, the Inca civilization, its triumphs and its tragic fall at the hands of the Spanish.
Jim adds:
"Only at the end did the Spanish possibly realize the tragedy they had visited on this civilization, one of the three greatest in the Americas. Ignoring almost all the culture of the Incas, the Spanish melted down gold, murdered thousands, and introduced European diseases to the naïve and unsuspecting population. Only a few realized the tragedy."One of the last conquistadors wrote:
'I wish Your Majesty to understand the motive that moves me to make this statement is the peace of my conscience and because of the guilt I share. For we have destroyed by our evil behaviour such a government as was enjoyed by these natives. They were so free of crime and greed, both men and women , that they could leave gold or silver worth a hundred thousand pesos in their open house..,,I beg God to pardon me, for I am moved to say this, seeing that I am the last to die of the Conquistadors.”
Unfortunately when this letter was written it was too late.
