MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH FRANCE
From Sandy:
“France has played a large part in my life. I moved here over 30 years ago . . . out of curiosity. I stayed because of love. Love of the countryside. Love of the cuisine. Love of the wine. Love of the language. And yes, even love of the people, who can sometimes be hard to love. But then again, can’t we all.
I’ve come to feel at home here. It is home. I know what cuts to buy at the butcher
shop. What day a neighborhood has its open market. What day the different museums and monuments are closed. Which theaters specialize in little-known movies. Where
to change on the Metro and which car to be in to be closest to the exit.
Both my children were born and raised here. I built up my own business as a translator, and that eventually led to interpreting for visiting business executives and dignitaries. Which naturally led to suggesting restaurants or stores, and ultimately to planning and giving tours myself.
ABOUT BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER.
“Seeing France through the eyes of others drew Sandy back to one of her old loves: photography. In an interview, legendary French Photographer Robert Doisneau said, "I am photographing little scraps of time."
“Unlike Doisneau, my photographs reflect the timelessness of France, rather than little scraps of it (time). I remember vividly standing below a fresco in a tiny church in the Loire Valley. It stood at a crossroads of eight houses and a café; that’s all there was to the village. The church was designed by an Armenian master builder who walked there from Armenia. When it was consecrated in 805, Charlemagne stood and marveled at its golden mosaic. Almost 1200 years later I stood in that same spot and marveled at what was left of it. 1200 years! That’s a lot of scraps of time. They are glimpses of what people long-past thought was beautiful, or important, or cherished. And perhaps reminders of what links us to a world that has disappeared."
In autumn 2007, Sandy Schopbach had a one-woman show: “Moments out of Time”. Other shows are being scheduled including one featuring photos of French children, in the spirit of Doisneau and another legendary photographer, Henri Cartier-Bresson."
Sandy’s first book is a coffee-table travel book: “Paris, in Quotes”, innovative look at Paris as (152 full-color original photographs illustrate quotes on Paris by famous writers, philosophers, diplomats, movie directors and musicians.). She has also written three children's books about the cats with which her family a Paris apartment (notably Miles the Cat) and is currently working on an illustrated book about buying a home in Paris. On Sandy's website are Recipes of the Month. In February, it's Accras de Morue. She'll bring some for us to try. It's one of my favorite appetizers. Sounds like a fun Sunday!
