Patricia's profiles:

Patricia writes on being an Expat:

"... As the years went by, I also realized that the feeling of being foreign and other, transcends even race. You are not part of their (French) culture. It doesn't matter who you are or of what origin you are. You're either French (in your head and behavior), or not. When I began to see that, I began to identify myself as an expat. The sum of being an American who lives in Paris, an African-American trying to find roots here, minus not being French - but seeing life internationally - on a large scale and permanently, equals my personal experience of being an expat."

paris-soirees

Our Guests of Honor:

Jack Stack, Author of the Thriller ."Dickster"

Deep Cobra, PERFORMANCE Poet
(The emphasis here is on performance. Deep Cobra is a real performer)

Jack Stack's 'Dickster' is the first part of a D-Thrilogy (3 part thriller) about the fantastic life and adventures of his character Richard Travelle. In this first novel, night clubber, Richard Travelle, having cut ties with his family, tries awkwardly to find himself, to gain control of his life. But his huge weapon and the local mafia seem to have other plans in store for our young hero.

Jack Stack wrote for underground peoplemagazines, of a dubious nature, in Canada. With 'Dickster, ' his first novel, Mr. Stack recounts the part of Richard Travelle's life when he was wild
and wily, carousing through Parisian nightlife.

From Jack Stack
: Please let us keep Richard's presence at Patricia's hush-hush, for this publication has put Mr. Stack's life in peril. He has gone to great lengths to recover the rest of D-Thrilogy (the rest of Richard's life extravaganza), dodging assassins in Berlin, and having to take refuge in the more beautiful regions of southern France. For one night only. Visit: http://www.dicksterland.blogspot.com/
Deep Cobra (Mervyn R. Seivwright) is an international PERFORMANCE poet, a nomad constantly traveling to touch and inspire hearts. He is a Jamaican born in England, grew up in both cultures and is widely traveled.. These travels are the foundation of the experiences that have inspired his poetry, which places you inside visual images that are others' everyday lives.
Deep Cobra has been writing for 24 years, performing poetry for 12 years across the East Coast, Mid-Western, and South-Eastern regions of the United States. Also in England, France, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Germany. He has also done workshops on poetry, life and performance for kids and adults. His CDs "Shedding My Skin", and “Breathe” are available on CDBABY.com. His books “Trials of a Stranger”, “Through Their Eyez” and “As Her Eyez Kiss” which are all available on Amazon.com. RENDEZ VOUS CHEZ PATRICIA

This Sunday 10 June At 18h30 Visit Patricia's website -
http://www.parissoirees.com/

Thank you for including your telephone number with your reservation! Really important.
Our Guest of Honor Thirza Vallois, Author, Expert On Paris
Paris: "Contradictions, Myths, Charm"
A memorable opportunity to hear author Thirza Vallois.
Fun, entertainment, inspiration, enlightenment, gossip, scandals and sex, are all on the menu.
Thirza Vallois is the world-renowned author of the legendary "Around and About Paris" series and "Romantic Paris". She contributes regularly to the international media - BBC, PBS, CNN, the Financial Times, United Airlines' Hemispheres. She has Paris at her finger tips! Almost all of the press is her new book about the last hidden corner of France : "Aveyron, A Bridge to French Arcadia" (www.thirzavallois.com). This week we will discover the second arrondissement — from the famous market street, rue Montorgueil, to the historical neighborhood of the press, where Emile Zola's J'accuse, in the defense of Alfred Dreyfus, was printed, and where Jean Jaurès was assassinated.... And where Louis XV's last mistress the du Barry was first discovered working in a bordello. The neighbourhood of the notorious Cour des Miracles, described by Victor Hugo in the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and the burial place of playwright Molière, and fable writer La Fontaine. The route taken by Louis XVI's tubmbril on its way to the guillotine. If you think you know Paris well, you will be amazed how much more you can learn as Thirza Vallois spins the enthralling story of Patricia's neighbourhood, past and present

Signed copies of "Around and about Paris" and "Romantic Paris" will be available for purchase. Visit: www.thirzavallois.com

Our Guest of Honor:

Fred Collay
Language Consultant. Entrepreneur

"Working With The French"
(Travailler au côté des français)

In Fred's own words:
"Vous êtes en France, depuis une semaine, un mois, un an, un siècle (comme on s'ennuit à Paris...) et vous avez travaillé au côté des français."... C'est une expérience que vous souhaitez partager avec d'autres?

(A rough translation. You've been in France a week, a month, a year, a century (how boring Paris can be...) and you work with the French....It's an experience that you'd like to share with others?)

Fred Collay has been a language trainer for six years and decided to become self-employed (started up his own business in Paris) two years ago. He has a broad background which helps him in designing teachers' programs and activities. He is especially gifted in creating games, situations and topics.

After pursuing studies in journalism, history and communications, Fred moved from France to England, where he began his teaching career as an Extra English Teacher. Back in France in 2000, he moved forward, still teaching in schools and working in companies such as France Telecom and Renault. Then in 2005 Fred left schools behind him and started his own company C.L.E.F.(Clubs Linguistiques de Experience et de Formation) and secured clients such as Hilton, eBay, Mederic (insurance) and Crédit Mutuel. Fred’s clients have learned that they can expect good teaching (in French and in English) and a high level of interpersonal involvement.

On Thursday, for those who missed Fred's talk in February, he will also answer a few questions from "would be teachers" and offer brief concrete advice, based on his own experiences, in setting up a language business.

American Painter In Paris
"Communicating Between Cultures"

paris-soirees

From Joe Johnson:

" I am Joe Johnson American painter living in Paris. I use visual arts in the same manner that the storyteller uses his voice to transport the listener on a voyage.

The language of my painting is to communicate a message that shows the differences between cultures.

My portraits lead the public to reflect on the identity which is not only defined by the socialization of a culture, but by the mixing of several cultures and traditions. My objective is to create a dialogue where each one sees the various aspects of its own character : physical, the political, the spiritual and the psychological.

My work underlines the origins of my personal beliefs, by integrating the African and European religious symbols there. It highlights the latent mysticism which exists in the Afro-American culture."

Judith Barr
Professor

"Food and Quality of Life"

From Judith Barr:
"We seek comfort and companionship with food (Paris Soirees Dinners as an example) and how food is so central to who we are and our quality of life. What happens when, as a result of some illness or other condition, we have to change what we eat? How does this affect our quality of life and how can we measure that change?

Colleagues and I at Northeastern University have conducted a number of focus groups with all types of individuals across the country. It would be great to briefly describe the role of food and our work in this field and get some international flavor on what others think"

Judith Barr is Associate Professor and Director, National Education and Research Center for Outcomes Assessment
