The Art And Business of Web Sites.

Julie:
What are successful site owners doing in terms of design, function and marketing? How do you get the results you intend? Can a person maintain a site without technical expertise? What standards should a site meet and what should it cost?

Julie Vetter is a web site coach and former manager of the web site division of a California ISP who now works independently from Paris. She relishes the triple junction of artists, computing and business that web sites cause -- a clash of worlds whose successful fusion can result in a modern work of art and a profitable Internet presence. web site: http://askjv.info

Tom:
As Julie says there are two very distinct sides to web site design. It's like the two different sides of the human brain. The art side is the creation of the atmosphere which communicates the core of the message to the viewers subconscious rather than conscious mind. This is the only way for a message to be truly received and taken on board when combined with the written message.
Tom Byrne has been a painter, illustrator and sculptor for over 20 years. Since coming to Paris he has changed tack slightly and moved into Trompe L'oeil also. His clients in Paris include Laurent Taieb the french restauranteur. He continues to do illustrations for Irish clients and has just completed SKY channels new national outdoor advertising campaign in Ireland.

RENDEZ VOUS AVEC PATRICIA

This Sunday 18 June At 18h30.

Our Guest Of Honor:

Gil Murray

What Makes A Painter Paint?

Showing examples of his artwork, Artist Gil Murray will describe why he chooses his subjects and depicts them according to his particular vision. He will show paintings of Paris and other locales in France and will tell us the, ten amusing, stories "behind the paintings". For example, he might paint a particular person because of the unusual visual "story" that person tells. Or he might be impressed with the roof line of a particular building. Or he might be moved by the colors of a particular building or sky. Gil is a natural storyteller and the mixture of his stories with his paintings will be fun

Gil Murray lives in the Boston area and does commissioned watercolors of buildings. He is on the faculty of the Cambridge, Massachusetts Center for Adult Education where he gives architectural walking tours of Boston. He is also a published poet and published cartoonist.

The Ultimate Networking Opportunity. Great Food And Wine. Conviviality. Speaker After the Cocktail. You Always Meet New And Interesting People!

MAKE CONTACTS: FOR BUSINESS, CAREER OPPORTUNITIES, SELF-DEVELOPMENT. SOCIALIZING.

Wednesday 14 June At 18h30. Our guest of honor:

Veronique Bessonat
Business Training Consultant

Selling Your Company. Selling Your Services. Selling Yourself

Veronique Bessonat began a career in sales in 1983, after studies at the Sorbonne in Economics, and has never stopped. She found sales to be the perfect way to sharpen her own business tools while teaching others to succeed. Helping others to succeed has always been one of her goals.

She has created seven portfolios of customers in the fields of banking, investments, commercial training and advertising.

From Veronique:

Companies: Usually I ask the manager how much turnover he expects after the training. We discuss the possibilities to get it. Then, I present a plan, saying that the budget must be “covered” at least 3 times by the new margin. It works. Recently, I had to make 10% more turnover in two months. We had 15% more in one month.

Individuals: I ask: how much you want to earn with your activity. And we discuss the steps to get there, and how we can make it, taking into account their personality, customers, competitors and services. And this works too, mostly because people feel that I really back them up. They feel that I want them to succeed. ADDRESS:

CAFE LIFE: PARIS. Cultural Historians Christine & Dennis.Graf. W. Scott Haine. Paris Soirees Dinner Sunday 11 June At 18h30

The Culture of Paris through Café Life.

This Sunday 11 June At 18h30.

Our Guests Of Honor:

Dennis & Christine Graf, W. Scott Haine, French Cultural Historians

Café Life: Paris

Christine Graf wrote "The Cafes of Paris". she and Dennis wrote "Paris by Bistro" together.

Cafes:

In an article written for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Anne Gillespie Lewis noted the Christine Graf description of the cafe-bar Lou Pascalou:

Using a mix of history, gossip, personal observation, and guidebook information, Christine Graf has done travellers a great favor with this charming guide... filled with sparkling little sequins of history and quotes from famous cafe habitues... One afternoon in a cafe gives you more of a sense of the city than visiting a dozen museums. —Los Angeles Times, on Graf's first book The Cafes of Paris.

Lou Pascalou is a bar off Menilmontant. It's also a joyous romp into the past. To get here you'll have to walk down Boulevard Menilmontant, a lively and untidy street lined with all sorts of ethnic restaurants. Ordinary people live here. Dogs bark. Children cry. Old ladies lug their packages out of the Arab grocery across the street. There is a life and a vitality here, even late at night, that you can't find in the more exclusive parts of Paris.

In their new book, Cafe Life Paris, the Grafs describe cafes in several categories. Some of the categories or themes are Great and Glamorous Places, a chapter about the legendary cafes that are as significant in Paris life as any monument; Legends of Literature and Art, including the cafe where you could once see Picasso sitting with Dora Maar, and Neighborhood Cafes like the one in the 11th where circus artists still stop by.

Paris By Bistro:

In her article Anne Gillespie Lewis pointed out that the book is more than a collection of reviews. The Grafs look at bistros in many other dimensions: by location and interest (those that attracted African-American artists, or the powerful, for example). If you're making a pilgrimage to Paris to follow in the footsteps of Hemingway and other literary lions, the Grafs book will tell you where they ate. (Hemingway wrote much of The Sun Also Rises at the bar at Closerie des Lilas, where at one point F. Scott Fitzgerald gave him the manscript of his new novel, The Great Gatsby.)

The Christine and Dennis Graf and W. Scott Haine books :are available at W.H. Smith’s, Brentano's, The Red Wheelbarrow and other English language bookstores in Paris. Click on the link to see Patricia’s favorite café: Café Marly: http://www-rocq.inria.fr/~gouet/Photos/Paris/diapo_36.html
